The best current generation Tennis video game?

New User
I haven't played a good Tennis video game since Mario Tennis many years ago.

I am looking for the best realsports (not mario/sonic) Tennis game to play on the Playstation 3.

I am going to the store in the near future to buy a few sports games, UFC Undisputed 3 MMA, Fight Night Champion Boxing, and would like to get the best modern Tennis game as well.

Should I look into Virtua Tennis 4, Top Spin 4, or the new Grand Slam Tennis 2 which comes out in 2 weeks?

I don't have the ability to demo any of these myself, so I was hoping some of the tennis pros and gamers here could point me in the right direction of the best Tennis game to go with this generation...

Notes: I would prefer my favorite player Roger Federer be a playable character choice, and I would appreciate a good career mode and online community if any of them have that. Otherwise factor whatever, gameplay, graphics, etc to tell me which game is the best option. Thank you TT.

I prefer Topspin 4 as the gameplay is so much better compared to Virtua tennis.

Having had both, Virtua tennis is more aracadey fun and games where as topspin involves timing your shots etc, very fun game :D

Sorry but all the 'new' tennis games are subpar (at least if the Grand Slam Tennis 2 plays anything like the demo)...

The best non-arcadey tennis game for the PS3 is Top Spin 3. Accurate physics and dynamics, realistic and controllable movement (unlike Top Spin 4), and pretty intuitive game play.

Although if online play is important to you, I would probably go with Top Spin 4; only because there are not as many players online for Top Spin 3 anymore.

However, I must warn you that Top Spin 4 is a significant down-grade from Top Spin 3... But if you haven't played Top Spin 3 yet, it is less likely you would notice the degradation as much.

I also agree that Mario Tennis for the N-64 was an absolutely fantastic tennis game!

N64 Mario tennis was, despite the characters, as realistic as it got, except that it was extremely difficult to miss the court...

The problem I have with playing as Federer in many games is that the often used "Stars system" of levelling up is totally inadequate. Federer for instance seems to so often turn into a Jack of All Trades but Master of none (or one or two, serve and forehand), and ends up being ridiculously easy to beat or poor to play as, and then players like Nadal and Roddick become unbeatable (Nadal for his speed, Roddick for his serve and forehand).

It would be great if a developer could one day implement a system where a certain shot will grow stronger and more skillful just through greater use. It would add an extra tactical element to a career mode where you start off wanting to hit huge serves and volleys to win Wimbledon and the US Open perhaps, and then decide your player needs to focus on speed and fitness more to win Roland Garros. Eventually you could end up with a player who can do everything brilliantly, but it would take a huge amount of dedication from making sure you utilise all the shots often enough.

Or you could just become the ultimate baseliner or ultimate serve volleyer.

And I agree with the above, Mario Tennis on the N64 is still the closest any game has come to being a truly great Tennis game.

Top Spin 3 was the worst tennis game I have ever played. Top Spin 2 was amazing. Top Spin 4 was fairly good. But top spin 3? Really? Everyone I know hated it and thought it was the worst game ever. Total waste of my 60 bucks when it came out.

Only people, I know of, who didn't like Top Spin 3 were those who were not good at it. Top Spin 3 did have a bit of a learning curve, but it was the best simulation tennis game. It was definitely not an arcade type of tennis game, you actually had to have good timing and movement to hit the ball correctly.

If you google 'itst' you will see that Top Spin 3 had a legendary following with very competitive online game play and tournaments. Top Spin 4 has fallen off and does not garner the same loyalty.

But to each his own: I defintely liked Top Spin 3 and thought it was a very good game! BTW, I'm referring to Top Spin 3 for the PS3, I did not like the Xbox version nearly as much.

Mario Tennis Characters and their likenesses :):):) :

Mario would be todays Nole, although at the time I thought he was more like Agassi (good mover and striker of the ball).

Donkey Kong defintely played like Venus Williams (overwhelming power and athleticsm but not extremely consistent)

Donkey Kong Jr was like Serena (a more controlled but less explosive version of Donkey Kong).

Wario reminded me of Lindsay Davenport (big, clean striker of the ball but slow).

Yoshi was just like Hewitt (incredibly fast but not a whole lot of power)

Waluigi had a similar game asthetic to Federer's but didn't play like him.

I don't remember the others quite as much...

I guess ghost would be like a Santoro (IDK)

Boo as a lefty was nasty. I remember playing a 3 set match against a friend and I had like 35 aces in the ad court ALONE. It went so far that I tanked points on purpose just to save break points with aces because it was so fun. Still extremely fun to play Boo.

Yea,

I played Boo lefty as well. His slice serve was wicked!

But once you got into rallies you were at a disadvantage with him. Boo had a great drop shot and lob as well!

Did you REALLY have to compare Donkey Kong to Venus and Serena? You really couldn't think of ANY two other players with big groundstrokes and slow movement?

Why would I compare a character with slow movement to Serena or especially Venus???

DK played liked Venus, simple as that -- anyone who thinks that might be racist would really be reaching!!!

Now if i said DK looked like Venus, that would be a different story!

DK was slow, Venus used to have some speed back in the day. Power is comparable to Venus though. Not racist at all I say!

Agreed.. Federer in both topspin 3 and 4 had exactly 1 thing going for him; if you could trick an opponent in a forehand to forehand rally, you could simply outmaneuver them due to the very high value on his forehand.. at least topspin 3 he had enough power (84) to push most guys around.. but the Federer in topspin 4 is weak. 61 serve, really?

And his 'perks' or whatever are stupidly chosen; I'd rather he had highly flammable than passing shot sniper, as at least with highly flammable if he were to get on a roll he'd be harder to deal with (I love that trait)

But there definitely needs to be a game where you can potentially max out all traits; there was nothing more disappointing about topspin 4 than the fact that there was pretty much no way to create a character that played how I see Sampras play in my mind: Lots of power, but also nimble around the court with great volleys.. the way the game is set up, this is completely impossible, and it's ridiculous that 20 OB players are so deadly *my best results in WT come with such a character, but I would much rather play with an all around player; I simply can't because I lose many matches I could win with a slower moving, more powerful character somehow.

mario tennis = best tennis game ever

to continue
i would have to say
birdo was a lot like monfils, could scramble and get to a ton of shots
waluigi was like michael llodra
luigi was like a del po or soderling
toad would be a weak ferrer
bowser would have to be like a fat karlovic?
peach = murray haha

The reason why people like Top Spin 3 is because it caters to power play baseliners, which is what the majority of high level players are in that game. As much as the hardcore crowd hates Top Spin 4, Top Spin 4 is a significant upgrade in all areas. Stamina and speed for example, are alot more important especially since they updated it so that depth will trump power alot of the time.

My goodness man, I really must disagree!

The main fault with Top Spin 4 is the horrendous movement! The computer actually sometimes decides how you character should move, which absolute heresy IMO  !!! Not to mention the absurd angles and ridiculously dominating 'control' shot...

I do agree that power baseliners dominated in Top Spin 3, but I countered them quite well (I was a defensive play maker). I also played against some excellent serve and volleyers.

Because of Top Spin 4's horrible movement, I find controlled defensive play is very difficult if not impossible...

I found I could do nearly as well with a somewhat defensive baseliner with a good return; in fact, he was the bane of many a power baseliner :). Serve and Volley is probably the hardest to use, even if you max out the S and V trait (40 power that way, which is deplorable), but still.. if you make it to the net in even a neutral position, it's hard as hell to counter you.

Same with power baseliners, if they get the upper hand in a rally to where they have enough time to get to a shot and hit it with power, you can't do much, and if a defensive baseliner gets YOU moving, you're equally screwed.

The newest is more balanced, but still has some terrible hitches.

Are you really going to talk about absurd angles and "dominating control" shots when all of the problems you just listed exist in Top Spin 3 but to a much, much, much greater extent?

For the longest time the serve in Top Spin 3 was obscenely overpowered. The kick serve out wide was basically unstoppable, among many other cheese tactics. Power baseliners could run you all day long and hit all out all day long and pay no heed to their stamina.

Top Spin 4 is a significant upgrade; in ITST matches, you have a wide variety of players (except those who are abusing Welch/Welsh, can't remember the Coach name) who utilize different styles of play. Speed, defense, and stamina are alot more important than power baselining in TS3 by a long shot. TS3 is pure 90/90 FH/BH and just pound away, and there's little to no interest in doing anything else.

And the movement is fine. They just removed the ability for players to insta teleport to balls like you could in TS3. It still exists to an extent, but nowhere as bad as TS3. BTW, the TS4 community is still going strong, much stronger than the TS3 community. It is the most balanced game where you can have a wide variety of playstyles and still succeed. Power baselining was literally the ONLY way you could play TS3, period. Playing anything else was suicide and asking to lose.

All of these games suck. it ain't like fifa or pes where you can really see how much they try to make things realistic and every detail is accurate.
Just go out and play real tennis my friend, there ain't no replacment for that.

Hrmm I'd have to disagree, I loved top spin 3 but feel that 4 is superior in every way. The biggest issue with 3 was all the built in flaws you could exploit to get guaranteed points no matter what your opponent did, not to mention the AI was also a joke, beating the computer on the hardest setting without dropping a point every game got old very fast. 4 has it's glitches but the gameplay is far more nuanced and dependant on reaction time as well as reading the play and the timing is a bigger factor. And as far as everyone i know, they all prefer 4 even though they were great at 3. The main reason top spin 4 has fallen off is because the patch ruined the game, before that it was the best tennis game ever.

In terms of realistic game play to current tennis.

You can't get much closer than PONG, set it on slow speed and you got it. Just change the background color to orange for clay, green for grass and blue for hard court.

I love all the love for Mario Tennis.Been searching for a good tennis game and just decided mario tennis was the best, never thought so many tennis fans would agree!

Had one of the topspin games for PS2 but it wasn't great. The CPU players difficulty was really weird and on lay the animation just seemed to run slower which was annoying.

not only when you play against him, but also when you play with him, it's like he doesn't have any weapons, it's all just regular.
they should make his forehand much more powerfull.

controlled defensive play is very much possible in ts4 if you implement strategy and not just try to outlast a person. even with agassi, a player with average movement, i could dig myself out of trouble easily if i selected my shots thoughtfully. granted, it helps that agassi has the shot counter as well as the wrong footing ability. i've had people who used becker out rally me from the baseline when they mixed up control/power shots along with the R1/approach button. there is so much more depth in TS4 than TS3, it's ridiculous. at least with ts4, you can actually step into no man's land to take the ball early which wasn't possible in ts3 unless your opponent hit a floater or you hold the R1/approach to run to the net.

i found movement more limited in ts3 since all you basically did was hit the same angles from the baseline. at least with ts4, it takes into consideration your court positioning as well as the shot selection when you execute a shot.

I have played the Virtual Tennis games, and the Top Spin games. I have not played Grand Slam Tennis however. Anyone played Grand Slam Tennis?

btw, it is awful how Top Spin doesn't have the player's real life service action. Awful lack of attention to detail. I agree that Top Spin has more realistic gameplay. But Virtua Tennis is better visually. If the makers of those games came together and worked on one game, it would be great.

I play Grand Slam Tennis. In my opinion it's the most rewarding tennis game there is. It has a few flaws which at times are glaringly obvious and extremely annoying, but overall you have near complete control of shot placement/selection including depth and angle. Takes a while to get the hang of but it's so worth it, and it also has one of, if not the best player selection.

I really like Smash Court Tennis 2 and Mario Tennis for Game Cube. Virtua Tennis 3, Smash Court 3 and TS3 are all pretty good too but sort of on a 3rd-tier in my opinion.

I could write an essay on this, but in short I think every tennis game has 2-3 really big problems which prevents me from considering it a "real" tennis game, plus a ton of little things that bother me like no commentators and little or no statistics.

After playing a game like NBA 2k12 or FIFA 12, all tennis games look like jokes

i really liked the fact that Grand Slam Tennis has the look of a polished franchise like the nba 2k series and fifa. best looking tennis game for sure, without taking the weird character animations into account. the game is presented really, really well.

i'm still iffy on the realism of gameplay, but that can be said of any sports sim. i agree that the analog stick controls are very gratifying.

Also, you could hit many different angles in TS3 (short, mid, or deep with heavy top spin, slice, or flat penetration) so what you're saying makes very little sense.

Sounds like you did not master using the risk buttons!

The point is; any tennis game that does not give you complete control of movement is going to be quite flawed, which TS4 certainly is!!!

The fact that 2K has put out so many patches for TS4 tells you that the game has alot of problems, also sales pale in comparison to TS3!

So the game was better than the demo? Its not available yet in the U.S.

I'm referring to Grand Slam Tennis for Wii, not Grand Slam Tennis 2. I don't like the art direction with GS2, the player roster is exactly the same and no new courts...hopefully I will play it soon.
