What's your 2012 Pure Drive Roddick setup?

I just got a PDR after demoing it and am finding it challenging to get the right string set-up and tension. This is what I've tried so far:

Addiction - This was the demo, and supposedly strung @ 60 lbs according to someone at TW. Played great. Lots of spin and power. Hard to control at times and a fair amount of shock to the arm. I was hitting impossible winners from everywhere on the court.

VS Touch gut (with BT7) mains and BHBR crosses @ 58/54 - Good spin, fair power & control, more shock to the arm/wrist.

VS Touch gut and BHBR @ 58/52 - Played like a frying pan.

VS Touch gut full bed at 58 - Good power, lost control unless I was going for every shot at 100%, poor spin compared to the other set-ups, little or no shock on the arm.

I'm still looking for nirvana, so I'd like to know what works for you?

Well, I just got it last Tuesday and had TW string it with a wholly unoriginal setup of RPM 16g (to tame the power) at 58. Surprisingly, it felt fine, and wasn't harsh.

Don't know what I'll try next.

VSGut main 45lb, RPM Blast cross @40lb.. it's killing my elbow and wrist.. I might cut it out and give it a try with difference softer setup..

You guys are crazy with your expensive string set ups! ;)

I use PHT16/Gosen16 @ 55/53, and it's a great set up for me. I'm not a fan of gut because of all the extra power it gives, in an already very powerful frame.

Babolat VS Team 17 mains and Synthetic gut 17 crosses at 58 lbs. Works out well for an over 50 player. Good blend of power, control, and comfort.

Interesting. Why did you choose that combo? I've been playing with VS touch gut at 58 and having a difficult time with the stiffness of the BT7, which is causing me some wrist issues, and some lack of control. I've been considering just using synthetic gut, but I don't know if I should go up or down in tension, so maybe your idea is a better alternative than a full bed of synth...? How's the spin?

Lower the tension especially if full gut is hurting your wrist. Gut can be comfortably strung well into the mid 60's. I recommend dropping to at least 52/50 if you can control the power.

I personally don't care for gut anymore due to its overwhelming power and it's a bit unpredictable for me. Comfort is A+ though!

I tried Pacific natral gut/synth gut @ 56 and it was not so great. Fair power, poor control. The racquet felt heavy and unruly. My next move is to try just synth gut @60, which is where TW says they string their demo PDR. I'll let you know how that works out.

The regular PD is not harsh to me. I use RIP control, have had wrist tendinitis in the past, and Im feeling great.

Maybe the PDR is harsh..who knows..I think it is just pretty heavy and powerful so you need to play a lot to always have the racquet head speed to control it.

just picked up a '12 PDR + last month. Initially had Lux Big Banger 16 in the mains at 58 and VS Gut in the crosses at 56. It was okay. I'm used to playing with a full bed of Lux Big Banger. The power seemed good, but not as much spin as a full bed of the Lux. The gut didn't last long at all. I think I got about 5 or 6 days of play out of the crosses.before they unraveled and popped.

Just had it restrung with wilson Enduro 16L at 54#. I've never used this string before, and it is just an okay string. It's nothing like Lux. less power, less spin.

I'm kind of lost on what I want for a string with this racquet. I haven't changed racquets in about 12 years. Been playing with Prince Titanium Michael Chang racquets (+1" in length), and I loved my Changs....just felt like making a change.

I just got one (2012 PD ((non roddick))) and I ABSOLOUTLEY LOVE IT! I have babolat addiction strings at 57lbs and it rocks. Hardly any vibration and I actually think the "cortex" thing works! Also I'm using white Wilson pro grip. I will post pictures of anybody wants me to.

I guess it's to mentally compensate the poly's tension loss...

I like my strings best around 50 (dynamic tension).

Are you using full gut? VS touch @ 58 is plenty soft on the arms.

I just got my first real racquet (also a standard 2012 PD) and my game has improved 10 fold. I was previously playing with a walmart Wilson which was OK to begin with but lost it's tension quickly and was UNPLAYABLE for the last week.

I'm using RIP Control strings at 57lbs as suggested by Power Player and all I can say is WOW.

I am just switching back to this racquet (played with the previous model for a year and a half). The 2012 PDR+ fixed everything that made me switch away from it.

Setup:
8g lead at 3&9
6g lead at base of handle

Unfinished work:
Handle length customization to 28"

String setup:
Babolat Pro Hurricane Tour 17 Mains at 65# and Prince Synthetic Gut Multifilament 16 or Babolat VS Touch 16 Crosses at 65#

I play mainly indoor tennis so I go down to 63# outdoors.

Are you using full gut? VS touch @ 58 is plenty soft on the arms.

Yes, the gut was very good on the arm and caused me no problems that way. I'd like to try it at some point with gut that doesn't have the BT7 in it, which supposedly makes the gut stiffer than it used to be. For natural gut it still felt pretty stiff, but I'd have to compare it with another gut without the BT7 to see if it was the gut or the frame.

Currently, I have full synthetic at 60 lbs and it's feeling pretty good. I'm getting plenty of pop and control and the arm is fine. I'd like to experiment later with a quality gut (without BT7) at 60 lbs or a hybrid of gut and a softer poly at 60/56.

Hey Everybody,

Well I finally decided on the 2012 PDR Plus model and mine is strung with RPM Blast 17 ga. @ 59 lbs. I also decided to try the Babolat Propulse 3 shoes as well. The racquet is very easy for me to use but I haven't had the chance to play a real match with it just yet. What does it for me is the stability. I feel like I'm using the palm of my hand to control the ball. As for the shoes, I'm very impressed even though I really cannot stand shoes with straps. But they work great...

Cheers!

Hey Bud!

I saw you string at 60/50, is that mains/crosses? I thought more then 5lbs difference was extra hard on the frame?

-Fuji

Naw, frames can take much more stress than that :)

The next frame I'll string lower.. probably 50/45. It took way too long to break in the gut at that tension.

I had my PDR+ (with leather grip and tournagrip) strung with VS team as full bed @ 50 lbs.

That was a rocket launcher.

I am getting the gut cut out and going with PHT full bed. Never tried this string. Out of a whim really.

Hi Guys, I'm thinking on adding leather on it, as this is a stiff frame I don't know if it would be a good thing to do, did anybody try it ?

Cheers

I have lead at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, I have been using a full bed of technifibre pro red code 16g at 63lbs but i am actually about to go back to a hybrid. Great racket!

Try Wilson natural gut. It's VS without the BT7.

Hi OTMPut, I've seen you are using leather on it, does it feel too stiff? I want to go with leather but I'm worried about being it too stiff and painfull for my arm.

thanks

I have 4 at 52 53 56 58 rpm blast and they are all ok at that range. I think I prefer 58 out of those and will go higher next round of stringing.

I have always shyed away from higher tensions with PDGTRs but the 2012 frame seems comfortable so onwards and upwards.

I also want to try low maybe 44 with lots of lead so the
Frame is 400 g but it won 't be this week.
