Why does #1 seed have to play #5 in quarters, #3 in semis?

In tennis, why does #1 seed have to play #5 in quarters and the #3 in semis? This seems unfair and ********; in almost every playoff format in all other sports (ie, NBA, NHL, March Madness, etc), the #1 seed would face # 8 in the quarters and #4 in the semis.

For example, at the AO 2012, Novak had to face #5 Ferrer, by far the best player any of the top 4 had to face in the quarters.

You have to keep a random element. Else every tournament will be the same if the ranking remains unchanged.

Nadal has never played number 5 in qrs and 3 in semis when he was number 1.

It a test of true ability for a number 1 player.

For same reason Nike & co. likes Federer and Nadal having yet another "epic" final. $$$

LOL Epic Beatdown not final......Stupid Nike.

If they were smart allow Djokerer Final. Would be epic not the boring grind or topspin moonball to backhands.

He doesn't. No 1 seed can be drawn against 3 or 4 in semis and 5, 6, 7, or 8 in QFs,

Rafa Nadal was the #2 seed at the 2010 Australian Open and was beaten in the quarters by the #5 seed Andy Murray.

your question is based on a false premise. that means you'll fit in quite well around here.

Because other sports are idiotic when it comes to this. Who wants to see the same tournament every single time? Once the whole draw rigging thing vanishes (i.e. when Fedal is surpassed by Djokodal as a rivalry), we'll get more variety in the semis too.
