Bryan Shelton to U of F

Bigger question is whether those blue-chip recruits who signed to play with GT believing that Shelton would be coach (that would have been a major selling point), are still happy about their decision.

That's awesome! I haven't followed his coaching at GT, but many years ago I used to see him when I was a junior player back in Alabama. He was playing in the 14's and 16's back then. Years later, after his really good results as Wimbledon when he was coming back from injury, I got a chance to play him in a first round match at a pro satellite tourney. He beat me pretty easily and afterwards, we were talking about junior tennis back in Alabama and I told him that I used to admire how good he was even as a junior (when I was about 12). He seems like a really smart, genuinely nice guy, who also happens to be a really good tennis player. Good for him!

Talk about a major step in the right direction, Shelton is a proven commodity, lots of class, exudes confidence, recognizes talent, hard worker. UF is in for a treat. As for GT, those are tough shoes to fill, one would expect they won't settle for nothing less then a proven quality replacement.

Why is your screen name "The Wreck" if you are a UGA fan? Seems odd.
True about signing with the school not the coach. Reality for high-level tennis players is the coach is a HUGE part of their decision. Just the way it is, not saying that's wise. Activity is already in motion. We'll see over the next couple of months who honors their commitment and who decommits, if any.
Well, it had little to do with Georgia Tech when I made it. I did think Ramblin' Wreck was a cool nickname though. I grew up wanting to go to Tech. Got accepted, went for my first tour....and just never really wanted to go back. Whereas I fell in love with Athens and UGA the first time I came. Three years later, what can I say? I bleed red and black.
Also, I still have plenty of friends that go to Tech and I still support the school in most ventures. My comment was just a joke about the fact that it's the most gender unbalanced school in the country. Something like 71% male and 29% female.

Basically, 100% of what you are claiming is false. It would be more true about football or basketball, but for women's tennis totally false. One time transfer rules would apply to them. If they request releases, they are generally granted without much hassle. They can then communicate with other schools and play without sitting out.
I certainly hope that isn't the case for the GT women, and that all go with their commitment. Great school, in a great town, with new facilities in the works. Also would hate to see everything Shelton built there come crumbling down. No one likes seeing their years of hard work implode after them.

1 and 2 are likely. 3 and 4 are subjective and debatable. Gainesville is a small town and Atlanta a metropolis, so to each their own.

Is money that much different ? i imagine Florida being one of the biggest NCAA D1 teams in the country, there would be more money to spread around. How much a D1 men's tennis coach make ? and is it significantly more than women's team coach ?

Wow! I would have figured something around 90k. I know that coaching salaries for non-revenue sports are all over the map. Can we even guage what an "average" women's tennis coach and men's tennis coach at a BCS school makes?

Yes, for two reasons: It's men's tennis & it is Florida
Florida has a much more diverse offering of majors to offer to students whereas GT is predominantly engineering and management. Has to be tough to convince women to go to GT if those are the common majors
And of course, in general Florida has a name advantage over GT. Thank Tebow, or whomever for that. It just is what it is. Both schools have pretty solid facilities and both are renovating them so that is probably a wash.
I don't know what the dorm location at GT is (like you mentioned for UF previously), but the dorms at GT were part of the Olympic village so I would assume they are pretty nice. It might even be an advantage to GT to be able to say "you'll live where Olympians lived in 96."

GT has it's negatives as does UF, however, as for the quality of education, it's hands down an academic powerhouse. Funny, I read that both are building new tennis complexes which will help in recruiting. As for Dorm life, athletic dorms are superior to nonathletic dorms in all institutions. As for $152K a year, a D1 coach worth his or her salt is worth it, especially if they have built a program like Bryan did at GT. The question remains, how bad and to what extent does an AD and boosters want to go in building a top rated program.

What if a girl wants to be a nurse? Or a teacher? Or a lawyer? Or a vet? That is where GT struggles recruiting wise. Obviously, GT is tremendous in the programs they specialize in. They are just limited to what they offer.

This is true. But at least at UGA the way around it was to build 4 buildings and I guess spread the athletes across them. They aren't athlete dorms per se, but all the athletes live there. I also wonder whether that rule applies if the athlete is "paying" for their room? If there's a loophole, I'm sure they've found it.
GT was always intended to a specialization school. It has the nickname "The North Avenue Trade School" for a reason and the curricula offered are stereotypically male, but to think the girls that go to Tech are limiting their options can be a bit naive. These days an undergrad degree is really just a "key" of sorts. Many Tech grads go on to law school or med school.

Choosing a school is really about the "fit" of all the pieces I think. It's not just about your curriculum choices. A coach can make all the difference and the location of the school plays a big part as well, but there are so many other things that play into it. Athens isn't a big city but UGA always manages to field ridiculously tough men's and women's squads each year. They have that legacy that makes players want to join. I think Bryan was starting to build that legacy for women at Tech.
As for Bryan, he's going to do well at U of F. It may take a 2 to 3 years to really get the talent and drive he wants out of his guys but I'm sure he'll get it done.
