I find it appalling that a guy with 14 majors doesn't know that tennis matches can only go to a maximum of 5 sets and not 7!

It's an interesting point by Pete Sampras actually, a 7-set match for grand slam finals may be better to watch. I think the Nadal-Djokovic match at AO 2012 deserved to go to more than 5 sets.
