go-to pattern of play

A player who moves forwards after hitting the ball is attacking.
A player who moves backwards after hitting the ball is retreating.

Not sure how this relates to our discussion, but ok, I'll try to oblige.
So a player who hits any shot, then moves forward is attacking? Just because
he moved forward?
So when a player takes a mid ct ball he can barely reach because it is low and
skidding away, and he half volleys it down the line weakly only to get crushed by
a passing shot on his poor attempt....this dtl is attacking?? because he moved
forward?

I guess it is clear that a player moving back is retreating, so guess that is not
in question, but sounds like you think any moving back is bad. Is that what you
mean about retreating?

Most players rally ability far exceeds their ability to capitalize on the good looks
they earn.

OK...haven't posted in a LONG time. This quote is the quote of the year. Absolutely true. The actual 'reasons' for this would constitute a book...but even to know this bit of wisdom would cause many minds to find solutions at whatever level.

A player who runs full speed to dig out a short ball, and pops up a sitter, deserves to lose the point. He should applaud the opponent's well placed short ball, because he's only DEFENDING.
A player who runs full speed to dig out a short ball, and hits a forcing return either sharp CC or dead deep DTL, is attacking.
Why would anyone bother to run full speed forwards and wide, only to hand a puff ball loser to his opponent? Given any choice at all, hit the ball far away from the guy who forced you IN.
Having no chance to guide the ball for a forcing shot, applaud your opponent!

no, my thought was to always hit cross court

but hitting a cross court off a dtl is more difficult than hitting dtl off cc

Actually for a lot of people hitting CC off dtl is easier, unless you are out of position. Running fh dtl off cc is easier than cc because a lot times it is a late hit.

True it happens, but not because it's easier, but because it's late and not going
to intended target or preferred sometimes. Sort of a catch 22.
