So since this College tennis - What exactly is this guy majoring in? If it's like Biomedical Engineering with minor in Astrophysics - maybe the guy actually wants to study and learn something!

The Gamecocks are big into that one. Must be nationwide if you hear it in the Big Ten.

BTW are you coming down to Clemson to see your women play?

No I couldnt make it, still not sure about nationals in Champaign as I may have to go to the west coast.

Diaz and his recruiting "misses"

This event with KU reinforces Diaz's recruiting mistakes in recent years. When was the last time he signed a big time junior and future leader for the program?
Who has he signed since Schnugg or Flores? Those were big time recruits that you knew going in would be top players. Wagland, Pasha maybe, but are they future top 5 guys? They certainly weren't as heralded as Schnugg/Flores.

I'm not counting people like Helgeson and Spencer since they originally signed somewhere else before transferring.

The point is that Diaz is either not singling out the right guys or not closing the deal with the ones he really wants.

It's been a while since the top incoming college recruit (or even one of the top couple of incoming Fr.) signed with Georgia

Very interesting question. I would actually think they really couldn't go after him financially. Obviously, money is involved with a scholarship, but it's not really a pay-for-play contract. Unless, he signed something that says he has to pay back the dollar value of the scholarship unless he finishes the season (with exceptions of course - injury, family emergency, etc.) I don't see it happening. It's simply the risk universities take in providing scholarships for athletes.

Anyone else know about this?

I don't know the answer, just guessing. Isn't the dollar value of the scholarship more from the education side? Since this event happened right after exams ended, it seems like neither side would have a dollar issue.

Now if he quit during the school year and tried to continue taking classes (on scholarship), it seems like that would be a different story.

well, my point was that an athletic scholarship seems contingent upon being a participating athlete on a given team, regardless of what the dollar value of the scholarship pays for (right, basically making you a full-time student, and paying for your education as you say)

so is this a breach of contract where he received benefits that he needs to give back now, by paying for the free education he received? i assume KU isn't a total moron and would not have quit right now if this was the case...

so, like others, i highly doubt this will end in UGA going after him financially, but my question is simply could they if they were deservedly sore about this and wanted to strike back? maybe someone around here has signed on for one of these athletic scholarships themselves or had a family member do so?

cough - epaige - cough (obviously feel free to ignore this, as it maybe isn't an appropriate forum - but sort of a general question you might feel comfortable shedding light on)

The dollar value is usually weighted to the academic value. I've seen during the recruiting process coaches break that value down for the athlete. There's a value to the athletic(tennis) side but I have no seen it broken out. USTA does on their website combining the academic and tennis value. Can't remember there exact estimate but its a healthy value for the student athlete and family. Scholarship amounts and tuition costs obviously vary.

No condition to repay found in the LOI I'm looking at. If it was there who would sign it? No one. However, the right for the school to take the scholarship away for violations is there.

Nothing that UGA can do now, but this does reflect poorly on KU and his ability to stay committed to the end. I know this sounds petty but if companies look at him would they want someone that quits and abandons their teammates when it suits them personally?

I refuse to believe it. I saw KU at an eatery in Athens just the other day.

Well, if he was still eating food a few days ago, then that certainly disproves the story of his departure from the team.

I went to the Georgia roster page to find out what he was majoring in, but his name is no longer there. This seems more significant than his food consumption as an indicator of his status with the team.

Is Singh Critical to Georgia team to winning the NCAA title ? doesn't the Dogs have good chance to win it all this year ??? Does this now pretty much take them out of that chance ? Can they still win against these Great teams like UCLA, USC, Virginia or Stanford ?

haha, nice

this is extremely unusual. I never seen this happen in college ever. right before the NCAA title run with Georgia having great chance to win it all this year. One of the best player just gone, and quits. Never seen this ever

They might have had a punchers chance to upset one of the top 4. Longshot to win if one if those teams had and injury and KU was still there. Without him their longshot chance is now a lottery players chance. Forget about them.

me too, I was told that Coach Diaz is one of the best classiest guy in D1. so if there was anything he could have done to alleviate or correct this issue, he would have found a way.
Do you know coach Diaz ? and is this true ?

I know coach Diaz very well but i am not about to call him and ask him about this. He is a great guy and thats why people end up transferring to UGA. I will call Will the assistant coach and ask him what happened. I hate this happened because we really overachieved this year and i thought something special could happen.

True that. Dogs could have taken it all this year. It was there for the taking. Virginia--mentally weak, UCLA--arrogant overconfident bunch, USC--subpar without those leaders now. Dogs vs Cardinal could have been a Great NCAA final, a Classic.

Feddie im ready to see your Stanford team back near the top where they should be. I just dont understand how they arent getting the top recruits. When i was in the juniors everyone wanted to play for either UGA or STANFORD.

Lol, ole miss is horrible - if UGA gets by a very good team like OU (which they likely won't) they should be able to get past a team that lost in rd of 16 of conference tournie (if ole miss even gets that far, a stretch in itself)

Sounds like Diaz bent over backyards.
Very selfish!!!!

what a pr!ck - if you're going to do something like that, at least have the guts to look someone in the eye, apologize, and tell them why instead of having them listen to you read a prepared statement like a lawyer for 5 mins - sounds like diaz is a nice guy who tried to make it work and gave a kid with a personality disorder like KU way too much latitude due to his racquet skills

i can tell you it would not be pretty if someone didn't want to be a part of team activities with coach k, or walked into his office intending for him to sit through a prepared statement about quitting - they'd get a taste of what he learned under bob knight at west point

To be honest Ole Miss did beat UGA 4-3, with Singh playing, granted UGA blew a 6-1, 4-1 lead in deciding match

i think many of their teams are incredibly overrated this year (UK, Ole Miss, Miss St, etc), yep, that's pretty well documented

it's also well supported by the national indoors where they won not a single main draw match that wasn't SEC vs SEC despite filling up half the field (7 of 16)

let's see how they do in NCAAs - my guess: terribly, again

it's just funny to me that we're mourning a potential title team - UGA never beat one of the four big dogs (0-2 against UCLA and OSU, didnt play USC or UVA) - they weren't ever a factor realistically, but i won't object again if you want to keep pretending from here on out :)

and lost 4-0 when Singh wasn't there in Indoors, and lost to teams like LSU and Bama more recently than their UGA win

to me, they're not very impressive

Agreed. Adding to your comments. The class of this year's SEC, Georgia, didn't even beat a single non-SEC top 10 team. Every one of Georgia's countable wins in the ITA computer comes from SEC competition. Their out of conference resume is lacking, especially in relation to the other top teams as you mention.

Karunuday was taking 28 hours of class? How can someone even function with that many hours?

Good question. I found that rather hard to believe. A student would have to get special permission to register for that many hours. Singh was Academic All-Big-Ten at Illinois, and on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll last spring at Georgia. He took the fall of 2011 off to play Futures before arriving at Georgia in January of 2012, so maybe he got behind on his degree plan, tried to make it all up this spring (article said he will finish his degree this summer), and burned out.

Sour grapes. After teams lose in the indoors, their fans pull out the sour grapes. When the team wins the indoors, everyone celebrates like it was a big deal, including players, coaches, and fans. USC seemed pretty pumped a year ago to win the NTI. For four years before that, after they lost, their fans would say they didn't care. Right. I saw Steve Johnson lose an NTI match that sent USC out of a tourney in Charlottesville a few years ago, and he was competing like you wouldn't believe, and smashed his racket to smithereens after match point. Then the USC fans came online and explained that USC doesn't care about the NTI.

funny that UGA sends a live blogger there unlike most of the top programs in that case, and tons of UGA fans tune in on that to cheer on their team

i can see why KU would want to get away from the second-class fans in Athens (topdawg excluded, sorry that your company sucks) in favor of returning to a better place...you know, where the water is barely drinkable

if you honestly don't know the answer to this question you can scan through my posts - say what you want about my team's lack of a men's team national title - i don't sit around here being pissy claiming that national titles of the indoor or outdoor variety don't matter just because, like anyone other than USC or UVA in recent years, we can't get our hands on one

mikej

but to give you a hint - my team is the one that has gotten just as far as yours in both the most recent indoor and outdoor nationals - only we lost to a better team in both, UVA rather than UCLA and pepperdine
