Michelle: Customize Pure Drive or stock?

Michelle,

Just curious about your Pure Drive....do you lead it up or play with it in stock? If lead, what are the specs at roughly?

Thanks!

Chris,

Stock.

BUT, I have it on my to-do list to go talk to Paul Reed and customize! I want to play around with it and add some weight to see if I can enhance it (although, I do just love the Pure Drive as it is in stock form).

I've also been spending some time with Chris' customized Roddick's (which I can ask him for the specs if you're interested) and Andy customized some APD's with tungsten, which I was enjoying in doubles specifically, but the tungsten has since flown off the racquet.

Thanks for asking!

Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, those tungsten strips go flying on pretty much any hard groundie...

It's pretty fortunate that you can put a stiffer poly in a PD @60lb. and not suffer any comfort consequences! Wish I could say the same! Haha.

Yea, I used to string at 62lbs! I'm trying to play around with lower tensions though as I do have a bad right wrist (tore a ligament in college), so some days I feel the repercussions of that. I have a bad habit of relying on my strings stiffness and tension to help control my game instead of adding more spin or giving myself better margins :p

I hear ya....I would hate to have to adjust my swing (more spin, less of an angle, etc) to compensate for a lower and more undesirable tension. It's tough to balance the playability with 'health,' but I guess it's worth a small dropoff in playability to avoid a permanent injury that could sideline you for a long time...THAT is clearly worst case scenario...

Exactly.

And I don't feel like the Pure Drive is stiff at all. It's always felt amazing to me (I've played with it since the first version came to the states). Call me crazy, but it just feels crisp and perfect for me (obviously, I'm not that crazy as it is a popular racquet amongst all kinds of players). But I find my wrist begins to feel the wear and tear when the strings I use are super stiff and strung over 60lbs. I can handle it for a few hits, and then I start feeling it...then the kinesio tape comes out and the ice and ib profin. I can get away with it at 60 lbs. But I'm finding new respect for the soft polys (like TCS), although I do still love the stiff ones that add the control!

What was interesting to me, was the tension drop that I've experienced with some polys. I tested one a couple weeks ago, strung one racquet at 60lbs and one at 55lbs. The 60lb one dropped much more dramatically after the first hit than the lower strung one...so that's something to think about for sure!

With all the play-testing, have you found something that has come close to the PD to you in terms of performance?

I'm enjoying trying as many frames as I can, but honestly, for me, nothing comes close!

My other favorites right now are the Donnay Formula 100 -- I love this at the net, but don't love it as much off returns.

The Dunlop F5.0 Tour is great, really adds some bang to the ball, but, I find myself over hitting and again, having to over compensate with stringing tighter. I do enjoy the feel of it though, I think I will take it out this afternoon as I haven't hit with it in a while.

Then the APD. It's growing on me, but I don't love it. I don't find it to perform well at all at the net and struggle with volleys and any sort of touch.

Racquets I'm trying to like...the Wilson 98 Blades. Have tried them a few different times, I feel like I should like it, but don't feel like it has the ability for me to put balls away on the slow court we play on at TW. (I should like the Juice, but it honestly feels like a poor man's Pure Drive...shhhh don't tell Wilson!). Tried the Organix 7 yesterday -- the verdict is still out, gotta give it another go, loved the sweet spot, hated the 104 sq inches.

PERHAPS the Yonex VCore 97 310g! I'm loving this stick now, and it's very highly regarded by many of your colleagues! :)

Of course, if it ain't broke.........

True!

I have tried the Yonex...didn't love it...wanted to love it! I'll have to try it again.

I actually don't want to switch. I just enjoy trying all the different racquets and seeing if there is anything out there comparable.

I will say I found something that may be my new favorite (not sure why I hadn't tried it before yesterday!), at least on these slow TW courts!

Any opinion on the IG Extreme 2.0 MP? Supposed to play like a PD.

I haven't spent much time with that frame yet. But have been enjoying the Head Youtek Graphene Speed Pro. Love that on my backhand. Don't love it on my volleys.

There's a very good chance I will be switching over to the Pure Drive Roddick...in stock form. I had only played with Chris' customized ones and didn't love them and just decided to pick up the stock PDR last week and loved it.

Thinking it may have just been a fluke, I played with it Wednesday, Thursday and Friday...I'm completely smitten! :p

I will take it out again today to make sure it's still the right frame for me! In all honestly, I never played with it before because I didn't like Roddick very much...pretty lame reason! And when I found that I wouldn't really be able to match my PD to the PDR, I got over the Roddick thing!

For even more destructive power I guess... 8) If you don't mind, what string do you put in it?

Hahah that's how I roll :)

Once I officially make the switch, I will be playing around with strings and tensions (I'm thinking Black Spiky Shark...still something that is a bit stiffer). I actually had grabbed one that Chris was using to playtest strings, so the one I have been playing with has white Savage strung at 55lbs (which is working quite well for me). I'm hoping to be able to stay in the mid-50s and away from that 58-60lb range though!

I have a PD I mess around with sometimes and have Sonic Pro Edge in there. Even though I really don't like the feel, it hits a pretty heavy ball!

Please try the IG Extreme 2.0 Pro before committing to the PDR!!!! Heck, try both the Pro and the MP before making your decision!

I have tried them...just haven't spent much time with them because I don't love them! :p But, for you, I'll give them a second chance...I usually know right off the bat if I'm going to like a racquet or not.

I've never been a big fan of the way HEAD racquets "feel." Ever since the day I picked up the Babolats, they just "feel" right in my hands. When I started my freshman year in college, I demod everything under the sun and nothing felt good/right. The second I tried the PD, it felt perfect!

In 10+ years, nothing has come close!

I have the same experience with the Pure Drive Roddick 2012! Played with a normal pure drive with same weight to match the PDR... But since i play with the stock version.... This one plays fantastic! Do you know how to customize my std PD to the PDR? Or maybe Chris?
My std pure drive has a leather grip weight and some lead in the hoop to have the same static weight and balance of the PDR....

You can use the Customization Tool on our TW University page to help you get the specs exactly! Measure the specs of your current racquet, and then go on our website and find the specs for the PDR. Plug in the values to the Customization Tool and it will tell you exactly how much and where to add the lead tape.

I'm actually going to be playing around with some customization next week on my PD I think. I will catch up with Paul Reed (our customization guru) and pass on any info I can to help!

That's the first thing I have read and followed. I have experiences adding some lead, now I have settled with a heavier replacement grip (leather) + some lead @12
But I still experience some difference between the PDR 2012 and my own customized PD 2012...
There must be something about the weight distribution in the PDR!? Or is it the stifness difference? Also I have heard Babolat isn't best known for qualitycontrol... Or are they from a different mold like someone suggested in another thread? (pd team vs pd swirly)

I must confess that I cannot measure swingweight and twistweight exactly...
So I was hoping someone here at the forum has experiences to share... In Holland we say: it's better to steal a good idea than struggelin with your own bad invention!

By the way: Keep up the good work on this wonderfull worldwide tennisfanforum!

WOW I am very curious! Looking forward to your experiences!

FWIW:
After a search form the PD GT, Radical YT, Radical FXP OS, Speed MP, Aero Pro GT... I have ended last 5 months with the PD 2012 and since 4 months the PDR 2012.... It's a wonderfull stick and I only want to differ with string setups the forthcoming period.
Hoping not to sell my standard PD2012 and I can customize it....

Ok guys! Love that you all love the Pure Drive as much as me :)

Anyway, after a talk with Mr. Paul Reed, who is the best racquet customizer that I know and can do magical things on racquets, we decided for what I want, it was best to make the switch to the Pure Drive Roddick. So I'm patiently waiting to get have a free moment to do some spec work because I have hit with several different Roddicks and they have all felt slightly different, but I have the winning one sitting next to me right now. So the second I get the chance, I will be speccing my new sticks to match my now "favorite" racquet.

I needed more mass to add a bit of control and the PDR does that for me. The plowthrough is awesome and I can get the controlled power that I sometimes lacked with the PD in stock form. I am also happy to report that I have been able to take my tension down a few pounds (which is a great thing as I struggle with wrist injuries after tearing ligaments in college). Also, side note, I did try 4g in the PDR last week -- didn't love it, which was a bummer, I wanted to love it, but it was too lively for me. I'm a big fan of the dead feeling polys which match perfectly for me in the PDR!

I'm a bit of a newb in the customizing world, but long story short, to spec the Pure Drive to the what I wanted was going to take quite a bit of lead and removing grommets. I stubbornly had never wanted to make the switch to the Roddick because, to be honest, he was never my favorite player...to which Paul Reed responded, "I'll give you a sharpie and you can cross out his signature." ;) But I can see past this now as this racquet is right in my wheel house. I have replaced the grip with a leather replacement grip and will give you the details of the specs once I get it done (fingers crossed that will happen tomorrow)!

Hi Michelle, I love to read how excited you write about your switch to the PDR.
I also find this racket awesome and actually better than my other PD 2012...
So we are a bit on the same path of rackets-exploring!

Still hoping that I can customize this racket a bit "the roddick way". or should I sell it and buy another PDR2012?
I have tried several things to customize it and to have the balance and static weight are the same.
I haven't tried to remove grommets? Can you comment on that? Or better: what dit the cusotmize-master Paul suggests? I play stock PDR and like that a lot.

Ok, here's what I have for you guys: (ALL thanks to Paul Reed)

http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=BPD11

http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=BPDR11

Based on the specs we have posted:

Two 12" strips of 1/4" lead tape can be added to the head centered on 12:00 to the Drive. That's .2oz and 2 balance points.

At the posted specs, that would shift the balance point to 2HL so then .3oz would need to be added to the tail to take it back to the 5HL of the Roddick.

At that point, .3oz would need to be added to the inner area of the throat to bring the static weight up to 11.9oz...

The "X factor" of course is, what are the actual specs of the racquet in the player's possession? However the Drive's appear light enough with enough wiggle room that it should be possible.

As far as the grommets are concerned, both models come stock with flared grommets in the bumper guard, so if they want the weight concealed under the bumperguard, the flared grommets need to be snipped off replacing them with a new set (that would have to be purchased).

Or, the weight can be added to the inner hoop visible at 12:00.

Hope that helps answer some questions!

I'd love to know Roddick's exact specs...maybe I'll do some research on this, although, I think as I've said, I'm enjoying the stock PDR...HOWEVER, I have tried 3 separate racquets, and I definitely favor one over the rest, despite the weights all being within 0.2 ounces of each other. Still waiting to spec my favorite one! So that info will come soon!

So, ironically, I've been playing with a PDR that has been altered :p (yep, I'm the token blonde in the office).

Looks like Chris added some lead (and leather) to the handle and whatever he did is absolutely perfect!

The one I like specs out to:
12.6 oz
8 pts HL
72 stiffness
332 swingweight

And it feels like heaven to me ;) I've tried some of the other PDRs that Chris has added lead to, and he adds the lead to the handle usually and around the hoop (which I don't like), but I like the extra weight in the handle!

Michelle, TW

Wow, you are at least a cool blonde chick who can handle a customized PDR 12.6 oz stick! ;-) That's to heavy for me (at least for now...)

Some info on Roddicks real racket here and here It seems that Roddick did actually played with specs close to the one they sold (the 1/2 inch longer version)

Another thing that crossed my mind: Now Roddick retired and other pro's on the tour using a heavier PD (like Benneteau, Fognini)... why don't they just give them the PDR-stick? or rebrand it to the PD Tour or something?

So I will exactly do what the professor told, but than I have to remove the leather grip off.. I want the static weight on 11.9oz (337 gram) total (incl grips, rubber dampener)

Thanx for your info and I will follow your experiences on your PDR customized! Keep them coming!
