I'm half Filipino, born in Butuan, but I hate to disappoint you because today I live here in the U.S.A.
I don't think tennis is a very big sport in the Philippines. From what I hear it's viewed as an elitist rich person's sport, and I think Badminton is probably more popular over there than tennis is...You can correct me if I'm wrong though, it's just what I hear...But I hope you find other fellow Filipino TT members :wink:

Yeah Filipinos love their basketball. Don't be fooled by appearances, those small little skinny guys can really shoot some hoops! Filipinos also love Boxing and Cockfighting.

Yes, basketball is like religion here. You can almost see basketball courts everywhere. Compared to tennis, you can hardly find one.

Manila is probably the most popular place for tennis in the Philippines. As a Mindanao person I can tell you that tennis is very very rare down there. Davao has some courts, but they are mostly reserved for the rich country club types. I can't speak for Cebu, but there's probably a few decent courts over there.

From what I've heard, tennis is as popular as basketball in mindanao.

I'll be going in November. My wife is from Malolos and there was a shell/clay court at her high school where here and her brother and dad all grew up playing.
I want to bring a racquet or two. Not sure if I will bring a bag. Might pick up a couple of racquets off of the sale rack and then just leave them when we go because I'm sure the balikbayan boxes will be full of polvoron, balisong, bangus, barong tagalog material, pastillias and all things pasalubong.
My side of the family is from Makati/Mandaluyong and Binan. One of the relatives is well to do and has access to a country club. They don't play but maybe we will play there.

I rarely play serious tennis there and usually with the local college guys. My regular recreational/social tennis group have built their own private court behind the government offices they work in (only in the PI ). The biggest challenge is the Tanduay and snacks they force on me during these night time sessions. The tennis isn't great, but is it a really good time.

I was thinking if I leave a racquet it would be with a "pulot boy" or someone that doesn't have a proper/nice one. Right now it might be my nCode nTour 95 as that rarely get's hit with...that is if I don't buy some to bring instead.
One of my buddies bought a bunch of older dunlops and brought them to sell.
I'll let you know closer to the trip what and if there is an agenda

That's a good idea, there's a lot of talent here IMO. Just not given proper attention. One of our top players started being a "pulot boy".

i played a few times in the phillipines in makati when i was there for work. was so hot i nearly died. i thought i was going to have to go for intravenous fluids once the session ended.

How strict are the shoe policies? I have x2 pairs of shoes for hard court but are basically worn. Not sure if they will hold up on clay/shell. Might get access to Valley Verde and think they have indoor clay/shell. I know I need to get new shoes but don't really want to bring them along for vacation.

Clay shoes are not that much marketed here in RP. A tennis shoe is pretty much "all-surface" here.

Yes. They crush (sea?) shells and lay it down on dirt. Not quite clay - but the same effect - the ball does bounce up and lose quite a bit of pace and you can slide. But it's not so slippery to require a special shoe.

I played on that type of court during my youth in Mandaluyong - back then they had 2 of them - its a form of grey clay we call "lastillas" with crushed shells packed into them - and sprayed sand, which allows the slide. Best played on during humid days because it has better cushion on the feet - very unpredictable though.
Hopefully, I get to play some when I visit!
Hope you have a great time and be able to share info re: good courts in the metro area - haven't been home since the early 90's and bracing myself for major shock, lol!!! Ill definitely look for the Magallanes courts! Salamat!

the courts in magallanes are synthetic grass.
fun to play on since NYC is only har-tru and hard courts.
Ive always wanted to try the West Side in Forest Hills.....totally off my wallet, but passed by many times on the way to Kissena or Cunningham....now Im really psyched about Magallanes - thanks!!!

forest hills is very $$ to play on their grass courts.
i have played in the bubble there in the past for USTA matches in the winter.

I think I played there. Had all kinds of footing issues.
The Shangri-La also has 2 syn grass courts too - less sand so movement issues with regular hardcourt shoes.

Played at BSU/Bulacan State Univ. This was the place that my wife and her family grew up playing tennis. They used to have x3 shell courts. Now one is set up for volleyball and a batting cage and another court is now painted cement. Seems very slippery. We played a set of singles on the sole shell court. The lines where very hard to see as it wasn't freshly chalked. Watched some good tennis between the PE Teachers and student teams. Might get to play another time there and then we will be in Mandaluyong/Makati next week. Hope we have time for some tennis there...
It's tough to watch the news though regarding the typhoon...hope that the affected islands will prevail.

Found the Felicisima subdivision court in Malolos. It is also shell. The grounds keeper chalked up the lines and we even had a pulot girl. We layed at 9 am. I didn't bring as much water as I would have state side and I was toast. Warmed up w the wife for about 15 min then we played a set. I double faulted on match point and was ****ed not because of the error but because the game had to continue in the ever growing heat. We will try and visit the court in the evening as that's when most of the players come out.
