Federer can make any dang subtle seed-planting excuses he wants! His fans will pick up en masse on the cue and say after the match today he lost to Nadal because he was "tired."

It made no difference at all. Nadal is just simply a better player than Federer on any surface at this point in their careers. Nadal was clearly the superior player today and rest had nothing to do with it. I say this as a huge Federer fan. You have to be able to admit when the other player is just better and not make excuses.
And I suppose the courts being slowed down and bouncing higher, which favors Nadals game, has nothing to do with it?
Yes, this has been Federer's worst year since winning a major, but the match would have been different if the tournaments didn't keep screwing up the courts.
Federer should just threaten to retire unless they fix the court speeds. It would force the tournaments to realize that fans want to watch talented players and shot-making, not endless rallies.
Nadal whined to the high heavens about the blue clay, and low and behold they changed it. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned there.
It would be beneficial to tennis if Federer organised a strike of the players who rely more on shot-making than rallying. We already have 1/3rd of the season on clay, a grass-court season that is essentially only one tournament and should be expanded (not to mention grass that has been ruined), and hard-courts all over that have been slowed down. Now the WTF surface has been ruined too.
Lets see how popular tennis would be if players like Federer, Tsonga, Del Potro weren't around, and fans had to settle for whiplash-enducing endless rallies between players like Nadal and Djokovic for hours and hours.

It is funny that Pete answered your question before retiring & beating all of those guys ( despite poor scheduling - yeah he got a break after semi , but he preffered night-USO matches , till finals his scheduling was pretty harsh at 2002USO ) - He won that, so please stop dragging Pete's name in whenever possible.
90's clay didn't give or asked you to refrain from excuses about Roger, I Love Roger & wanted him to win this WTF dearly since if he did so - He'd probably have had enough confidence to start next year positively. I was very surprised to see the match scheduled as 1st-semi , it was definitely a bad-scheduling for Roger, but please Pete & Roger are different beasts - I have accepted that , why can't You ? Pete for his age & athleticism - was great at the end of his career , I'm sure if you undertand tennis & tennis-conditions you'd agree that if ( and that's a BIG IF ) Pete continued to play 2-more years like Roger He would win atleast 2-more fast court slams , Yes those two years Pete would have been miserable in masters tourney's & lesser surfaces - but he had that magic-run capability that Roger is solely lacking at the end of his career. I am still not counting out Roger ( I still believe he can win 2 more slams - Yes, I'm crazy ) , but at the same age Pete's mentality and game gave him better edge over Roger in slams/year-end tourney's.
I find it a mark of greatness that still now Pete is dragged into these conversations after all these years because no matter how hard you try to prove w/consistency-stats & all other arguments , Old-Pete is the measuring stick old-Roger has so far failed to live up to.

To true. I believe Federer hit some winners in the first set. Djokovic didn't hit one winning shot until the last game of the first set.
Court speed and bounces can favor one player over another, but at this point, I think Nadal can beat Federer head to head on any surface. Even in Federer's peak years, Nadal was just a difficult matchup for him, although he could still have success on some surfaces. Now that he is far off from his prime, he needs the surface to favor him to even have a chance.
As far as the surface at this particular tournament is concerned, I have not seen any unbiased evidence regarding the speed or bounce, so I am not interested in discussing it.
As a fellow Federer fan, I feel embarrassed by this sour grapes post. Federer does not need you to make excuses for him. He simply lost to a better player today, but has still had an amazing career.
This is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. Thankfully, Federer actually has some class and would never do such a thing.

But Nadal didn't have to do that. He had a full day off to recuperate.
The point here is why do Ferderer (and of course Djokovic) has to get in shape, but Nadal does not, since he always gets an easy schedule with plenty of breaks.
It is not equal playing field for everyone.

What are you talking about? Federer won a major just last year at basically the same age as Sampras at the 02 USO. Had one of his better seasons and got back to #1.
I fail to see how "Old Roger" has failed to live up to "Old Pete".
Sampras is an all time great player. I like him, but users like 90's clay are the reason people bring up Sampras in derogatory terms. It's the easiest way to shut him up. He's a bitter Sampras fan who's chanelling his rage at Federer surpassing Sampras in the form of Nadal.
Example yesterday when he droned on and on about Federer losing to the ZERO Nadal on indoor HC in the match thread, yet Sampras has losses to many players worse than Nadal on indoor HC. Kuerten, Correjta, and Rosset to name a few. And you know what the funniest part about it was? He never responded to the posts where people pointed out Sampras's much more embarrassing losses.
And what you said about Sampras winning 2 more fast court slams if he kept playing is pure conjecture. By that token I could say that if the courts were faster these days, Federer would win more fast court slams.

Sorry but you placed Djokovic in a wrong camp. Djokovic is an offensive minded shotmaker who happens to play a great defense as well.
Much better shotmaker than Del Potro or Tsonga for that matter.

I wish they would stop asking Federer these retirement questions. They could harangue him out of the game before he really wants to go, and that is not fair on him. If he wants to play, he should be respected enough that he can do so without these harpies around him.
