Head FXP Tour Hybrid?

Has anyone tried a hybrid of Head FXP tour with some kind of a poly?

Any opinions on the durability of the Head FXP tour vs. multifilaments?

I have used it in the crosses with 16g BHBR for mains and I thought it played and held tension well. I will string it that way again, but my preference is 17g BHSR/BHS.

I should mention that I did not like FXP Tour in the full bed, so this was a good way for me to run through my packages of it as it works well as the 16g cross with 16g BHBR.

Hi, I tried exactly this. Since FXP tour had such low stiffness ratings and high spin potential (according to TW) I tried it as a gut replacement in the mains. Unfortunately, results were inconclusive as I was trying 16g gut/poly and fxp tour/poly in my 18x20 pro tour 280's and I think the string pattern is just a bit too tight for 16g. I found neither combo gave me the spin I was after but I thought the FXP tour played close enough to the gut setup (soft, lots of power, good feel) to be a passable substitute. My next test will be in a 16x19 pro staff 95. In the end though I think I want 17g FXP tour, but alas, they don't make it...

I find FXP tour to be a fairly durable multi but most other multis i've used are 17g

fyi, I had better luck with Ashaway Monogut ZX (zyex string)

That sounds like a good idea to use the fxp tour in the mains. It has similar touch to gut, but I've only used it as a full set.

It is more durable than the RIP Control I have tried for crosses. FXP Tour is so muted however that I don't see anything to gain by using it in the mains. Rather in the crosses with a poly like BHBR it may save some player's arms.

If TW says it has spin potential, I have not seen it.

Yea. That's really what I'm looking for is a durable multifilament for the crosses. If it's more durable than RIP control, then it's definitely worth a try.

I felt the same and never strung another full bed of it. It has been much better used as crosses with something like Tourna BHBR 16g for mains. I would think it would be a good cross for RPM Blast as well. Some my prefer it more if it were made in a thinner gauge.

I agree with the full bed consensus here. It's maybe a bit mushy with not great spin.

However, I played with it in the mains with an 18g poly (mosquito bite) in the crosses of a k pro staff 88 (16x19) the other night and I thought it played close enough to my normal gut/poly setup (in terms of spin, comfort, control and power) to be my economical choice. (it was about a $10 stringjob vs. $20-25 for my normal gut/poly). I have 2 new pro staff 95's and maybe I will keep one with gut/poly for matches and use the fxptour/poly one for practice.

just my 2 cents. and no, i haven't ever tried it as a cross string.

Yea, the fxp tour in the mains with a poly cross seems to be a good idea. How would you compare the durability of the fxp tour with natural gut. I read somewhere that when one puts a multifilament in the mains and a poly cross, the multifilament snaps pretty quickly.

I doubt that you will run into this issue with FXP Tour. It has a solid poly core and is quite a durable string.

Off topic, but a full bed of FXP Tour in a Muscle Weave 200G is incredible. The muted (almost dead) feeling on impact works great with this racquet.

Use it with Babolat pro-hurricane (not PHT), both at 54 lbs in a pure drive. I really like it, but haven't experimented with much else except Xcel. Xcel was fantastic but too pricy for a cross. To me the combination of a stiffer multi with a soft poly works incredibly, and softer on my arm in a stiff racket like PD, whilst still getting benefits of poly :)

I have never hit with it but I've already strung about 15 rackets with FXP/N.VY. People seem to love this combo. Anywhere from 63 to 55 in tension.

Just tried it with FXP tour in the mains with Head Sonic Pro 17 in the crosses...amazing spin and power

Hi donnaypro, I'm glad that you tried this combination as I am considering trying a similar hybrid with FXP Tour in the mains and Sonic Pro Edge in the crosses. It will be the first time that I put the softer string in the mains and FXP Tour seems like it would be worth a try with that. It's nice to hear that you found very good spin as I'm hoping to increase the spin potential with the hybrid I'm using now (poly mains/syn gut crosses). If I may ask, how would you compare the spin capability of your hybrid with a full bed of poly? Spin potential is the one thing I miss most about full poly. Also how would you rate the durability of this hybrid so far? FXP Tour seems to be a pretty durable string so I am hoping that it will hold up with it being in the mains. What tension did you use for the mains and crosses. It's also nice to hear that you found good power with this combination, but that doesn't surprise me too much as FXP Tour is a pretty powerful string. Thanks and enjoy using this hybrid.

Hello to the rest of the forum as well. This is my first post, I have read this forum for a little while and it's been very enjoyable. The passion of the posters is very evident and it's great to see that. I look forward to chatting with you from time to time.

I've been using this combo for a while now and just tried it with rpm blast in the crosses.

Spin potential is similar to a full bed of poly. But one thing that I have noticed is that this combo works good for an 18 X 20 string pattern racquet. the spin potential for this racquet is great with the fxp tour. Try using it with an 18 guage cross string.

But with an open string pattern, a poly main will have more spin potential. Let me know what you have found using this set up.

I've been playing with FXP tour mains at 50 and Yonex PTP yellow crosses at 45 for a little while now. Not bad! FXP is as soft as a multi but way more durable, so it works fine in the mains and really softens the whole setup. FXP is not great for spin and nearly as powerful as a multi, but the ppt crosses really help with control and spin. PTP is the softest poly I've played with. Poly mains hurt my shoulder, but this setup is 100% fine.

Still thinking about a gut/PTP hybrid though.
