Round Soft poly as cross in Multi/Poly hybrid

Hi,

I have started what seems like a life long journey on finding my favorite string setup. I have tried a full bed of shaped poly, and like the extra spin but have found even the softer rated ones a little harsh (Cyclone Tour, Black Widow).

I then tried using them as mains while using a multi or much softer co-poly cross (FXP Tour). I chose the FXP Tour because I enjoyed the comfort of a full bed of FXP Tour, but needed more control and spin potential.

I am now thinking of using FXP Tour or a multi as a main and a poly as a cross. However, I do not think any of the shaped polys are a good idea for a cross. I suspect the shaped polys will bit into the FXP Tour and decrease the durability by quite a bit.

My next experiment will be with a poly in the cross with FXP Tour as a main. Any suggestions for round polys in a FXP main / Poly cross hybrid?

I am using a Head IG Prestige Pro stick.

You can try Topspin Cyberflash or Signum Pro Poly Plasma, both are very good, low-medium comfort (for a poly) round poly strings and are not very expensive.
And a word of caution - in 16X19 pattern racquet the mains might break pretty soon, so try to go with the thicker mains.

Hope that helps,

That helps quite a lot. I am putting the Topspin Cyberflash on my list for to playtest soon. If you have a minute, can you expand on whether you use Topspin in a full bed or a hybrid. If a hybrid, what is your preferred setup?

Thank you.

I seldom play full poly. I like to put poly in crosses, because I think almost every string plays better when crossed with poly. As a note though, I play with Radical MP which has dense 18X20 string pattern, so string are less likely to break too quickly.

What's the tension you all use with multi/poly, please refer what is your racket/pattern ?

I like better to put syn. gut in mains than multi, crossed with poly. The tension I use is 55 lbs form mains and 51 lbs for crosses. Sometimes I bump it up by 2 lbs (both mains and crosses) if I use a bit more powerful multi for mains.

Hope that helps.

Red Devil by Pros Pro. It is soft, slippery, cheap (35 bucks/200m?) and does the job.
Some around me are playing it full bed and are very happy.

Red Devil is a very good choice for crosses that's for sure. I also like Co-Focus and Mosquito Bite but Red Devil's price/performance ratio is just unbeatable.

Co Focus is always a good, inexpensive option but I've always had the best luck sticking to a full bed if using a shaped/textured poly for some reason. I haven't tried many Multi/Poly hybrids but I think it's more about which multi you use. A soft multi with a poly will notch up quite a bit if it stays in the racquet for longer than a week.

My top poly crosses are:

1. Kirschbaum Pro Line II
2. Solinco Outlast
3. Isospeed Pulse
4. Tourna Big Hitter Silver

16g for all.

Make sure the FXP mains are 4 lbs tighter than the poly crosses.

I found your post interesting as I went through the same journey.
I loved a full bed of Tourbite or YPTP, which hurt my arm. Then crossed Tourbite mains with FXP Tour (you probably picked the latter, like I did, by looking at the stiffness ratings. Now, I settled quite happy with Wilson Nat Gut 17 (you can also use Tonic+) as a main and Co-Focus or Moquito bite as a cross. Give it a shot. It is worth it.

I'm saving that setup as my "best and most expensive for last" experiment. YPTP was / is on my short list for full bed or hybrid cross poly to try.

Update on my quest:
I played 2 sets last night.

First set was with Cyclone Tour / FXP Tour hybrid, and it just did not do it for me (got crushed and never felt comfortable with fell of ball on contact). Second set, I switched to full bed of Cyclone Tour and all of my shots felt more "dialed in" (©TW Chris), and coincidentally I flipped the score around. Did/Do not have any arm pain, but it was only one set and the first time I have played in a week.

The full bed of Cyclone Tour was freshly strung, but at a much lower tension than I have ever done (45lb on a lockout). I am going to play with this setup again this evening for a full match and see how my arm feels.

I am a tinkerer, so regardless of the result, I still plan on experimenting with FXP as a main (I have 3 full sets left), so all the replies on this thread have been really helpful.

My Poly Cross Finalist List (in no particular order)
  • Mosquito Bite
  • YPTP
  • Cyberflash
  • Red Devil

Just bought a few sets of the new Tourna Black zone 17 to try as a cross in a multi poly hybrid with PPC 16. Right now I have the same setup with Black Widow 17 and it plays well but I'm worried about durability with the shaped poly. At $7.95 it's worth a try.
