Just another Wise 2086 thread

I'm most likely going to get a wise 2086 for my gamma profession stii. However, I've been reviewing threads on the wise and the discussion of the declining quality of the Wise has me worried.

I gather that these thoughts have come about by circumstantial evidence and anecdotes.. nothing actually objective.

Being that I don't need a Wise 2086 now.. my crank is still going strong, I just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on whether the current TW price tag is worth it. Thanks!

I doubt that anything has changed. Herb only passed away in April. How fast could it go downhill? What has changed with it?

I'm really not sure. That's why I'm fishing with this thread. I just used the search function and it seems that there has been some general quality issues lately.

TW is not reflecting the price increase yet. My guess is the price will only go up from where it is. The quality issues they are having seem to be minor so if you're interested I'd get it now and if you get a bad one send it back for replacement.

I have yet to see anything concrete on these "quality issues" other than one post. I think it is more someone trying to be the omnipotent one rather than any basis in fact.

best thing I ever did with regard to stringing.

Any flat adjustment you made going from a lockout in terms of tension/stringbed differences?

I tend to produce tighter jobs, it seems, than others in my locale. At least on a lockout.

I bought one about a yr ago and had a problem with the small jack where the red button connects. It broke. I called them and they sent me a new plate so i was able to replace it myself. Other than that machine has been perfect. I only string for myself though so cant comment on how it would hold up with higher volume of frames.

I can tell you what I did....

The machine has two modes, lockout and CP. I set it in lockout, pulled my regular tension and then while watching the tension display, clamped the string after what I thought was a regular interval. The number that was displayed then was my best guess at what I should set the tension pull to when using CP.

I have since adjusted to the increase in tension and truthfully don't worry about it. I haven't had any complaints from those I string for so it's all good.

In other words, just string at your normal tension and see what you think. From my perspective, the string bed seemed to perform more evenly if that makes any sense.

The red button is fantastic. I don't even think about starting the tension head now, wrap the diabolo, pull through the jaws, index finger on right hand activates the tensioner.

Also, I think I'll NOT add the Gamma adapter??

Seems to me that pulling over/under throat is equally as
"inconsistent" as otherwise?

Anyone know of any problems with doing so?

Would it put undue stress on the tension head?

I've e-mailed wise asking this as well.

Thx

I strung a frame w/ my old dropweight at my normal tension and took a measurement using RacquetTune. Then strung one on CP, using 'prestretch' for my gut mains, and then took a reading.

Wise came out 4lbs tighter, so I adjusted accordingly, along w/ everyone else I string for. As a result, whenever I get a new customer, and they tell me the tension they want, I ask who strung it before. If it is a place/person I know, I will usually drop it a few lbs from their request, especially if its full poly.

From Dan Martinez email

"Yes. You can keep the adapter off, it may be too low, you will need to use the Diabolo. It comes with the machine."

that is fine with me, would already leave and use the diablo of course but as it is attached and moves with the gripper it seems like there would be some "lifting" on the gripper/diablo is it pulls a slight downward angle when tensioning in this configuration.

If you have the diablo that comes with the Wise you don't need the Gamma Adapter, (assuming you have a crank stringer.) If you choose not to use the diablo then you will have problems with the string sliding in the front part of the linear gripper. BTW My Babolat Star5 pulls from below frame and has 360 rotation but still diablo hold the string high enough so that the string rubs on the bottom of the frame while stringing. The closer the gripper is to the level of the string bed the less frame to string friction you will have on the center strings in the frame. As you go to the upper and lower crosses or the outside mains the tension will do down unless you use your brake to pull the string straight through the grommet.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will likely be pulling the trigger on one of these bad boys soon.

Just to clarify on what was said in the last few posts: I have a gamma progression stii which is a crank. So I DONT need the gamma adaptor as long as I use the diablo?

If you use the diablo, you will want to put some loctite on the hex nut that holds it on. Without that it becomes loose pretty quickly. Use the non-permanent loctite product in case you need to remove the diablo at some point.

Is that a new diablo you have or one of the first ones that came out. I ask because I thought that problem was fixed.

As usual, Rabbit is one of the few here with his feet firmly planted in reality.

How easy is it to put the Wise on my Gamma Progression II fixed clamp? Has anyone else done this? Would I need an adapter?

I bought the machine about 2 1/2 years ago and the diablo came with it. It would start to come loose very quickly, after stringing one or two racquets at most. The loctite worked great and I have never had to touch it since then.

Thanks, if I have this problem I will definitely use some :)

Seems like if you can take the bracket off the side of the gripper you would want to use permanent Loctite or finger nail polish. You never need to take the diablo off the bracket. But you could use either.

My wise has arrived. It's supposedly waiting on my doorstep. Any tips for setup and first time use? Assuming its easy but fire away if you have something helpful to say. I'll try it out today perhaps.

^^ It comes really well packaged - I think it's worth keeping hold of that just in case you ever need to send it anywhere for servicing / fixing / selling.

Everything is easy. Enjoy!

Yeah, Ive read it too never knowing the source.

Now I know the source.

While this unit may be just fine (i didn't even mount it)
I'm not paying for what may have ??? rackets already strung on it or at least parts of it. It's an unknown.

Machine is going back.

I would try to get them to replace it with a new unit. But now in the back of your mind you will always wonder won't you? I still think it's a good design and works well (when it works.) If you get one that's new and works well you have the guarantee (if they stay in business) and you should be happy with it for years to come.

I ordered my Wise a few days ago, hasn't come yet though. What signs pointed you in the direction that it was used?

Scratches, dings etc. Two of the three mounting holes had obviously been used several times perhaps, as the anodizing was all worn off. Anodizing, wear marks on the mounting "track". What appeared to be corrosion or bad paint on the bottom/track (possible attempt at repair?)

The mounting bracket was brand new comparatively. I did not unwrap the cords or the gripper as I had already seen enough.

It was very easy to see.

Just sent it back.

Sorry to hear that. I can imagine how frustrated I'll be if my unit is clearly used after shelling out that much cash. Hopefully Wise didn't send a whole batch of refurbished units to TW.

I'll keep this thread updated with how my experience with the new unit turns out.

TW shipped it to me for 5 bucks.

I shipped it back..........cost me $30.

I expect to be re-imbursed and a new machine sent to me in short order.

Once I'm done with the transaction, the folks at Wise will hear about it too.

I hope you do not have a hassle getting a refund for the $30.00 return shipping. Better to insist on a call tag and RA ahead of time for return shipping -- just to avoid headaches.

I don't expect any trouble, but I have an e-mail trail of exchanges.

No reason I should have to foot the bill for this.

Good ideas, nonetheless.

All the shipments I get from TW come with a return tag and never cost anything. Maybe you should have called first.

Irvin

i don't think that happens except with "free shipping" purchases.

Probably true but they can print up a label and send it to you via email. If they are going to reimburse you I'd think you should have called them for a discounted price at their rate.

maybe so. i'd also think they shouldn't have sent me a used unit.

this is MY time and MY hassle we are talking about.

i'll get re-imbursed. i have a spine and won't stand for this sh*t.
