Thoughts on squats in the gym...

It is definitely a good idea to move up slowly, your body needs time to adapt to heavier workloads. I believe this adaptation is more than muscles it includes your tendons and structures around your joints. Part of losing your fear is knowing what other people are doing and realizing you are...

Can a guy exclusively using a slice backhand...

Fabrice Santoro hit about 90% of his two handed forehands with slice. Philipp Petzschner who is in the top 100 hits his backhand almost exclusively with slice. So yes it can work up to the 7.0 level. I think you would be better off being able to hit both but it can work at any level.

    Welcome to 4.5 little boy

I very much agree with this post. SkiRacer, you may not mean to but often you come across a little condescending in your posts. You often name drop coaches and accomplishments of people you have hit with, and are quick to say you play open tournaments. It would be more interesting if the players...

    Yet Another Sandbagger

Also I have played some high school tennis players in open tournaments that probably are 3.5s, playing in high school or open tournaments does not automatically mean they are good. Some high school players are very good others are not.

Point of over/under grip on deadlifts?

As the weights get heavier the double overhand grip gets harder to do because the bar wants to roll out of your hands. In short you can lift more with the alternating grip. I use the double overhand with up to the heaviest weights I can handle with it, it helps develop grip strength. I think it...

    Junior tennis regiment.

If you are talking about the sport of weightlifting (snatch and clean & jerk) most very successful ones start before they are 16. Another interesting thing about weightlifting is I believe that it will also help strengthen the soft tissue of the joints making them less prone to injury as well...

Has anyone heard of a routine called WS4SB?

If you posted this question at the Starting Strength forum you would get the big YDNDTP (You did not do the program), because there is no way those would be your stats if you have been doing the program from 6 months. The bottom line is you are not very strong, you are not squatting your body...

    Question for 4.0+ players

I find it interesting that people think tennis revolves around USTA leagues. I play some USTA league and tournament matches but it is a small part of the total tennis I play. As a 4.5 I have more people to play with than I have time. My goal for this year is to be bumped up to 5.0 which will...

    Building Leg Muscles

Apparently my joke wasn't a very good one, when actually cycling dropping people means leaving them behind, however no matter how hard I worked in spinning class they stayed with me. And I agree in general being a little overweight doesn't mean one is out of shape, however in cycling having...

    Building Leg Muscles

I really didn't like spinning the few times I tried it. Aside from being indoors I just couldn't drop the over weight and out of shape people next to me no matter how hard I worked.

    Muscles Needed for Rackethead Speed?

Fast twitch muscles are often misunderstood. They are used when exerting near maximum force, they have less to do with the speed of the movement. They are indeed used in sprinting because sprinting has a lot to do with the amount of power one is able to generate. So weight training can be quite...

    The J011yRoger Bet Reloaded.

I dunno, I started off thinking Jo11y was a strong 3.5 to weak 4.0 and he was totally full of it when he said he was highly ranked in his section. I've been proven wrong, he seems to be at least a strong 4.0 and apparently you can be highly ranked in a section by simply playing enough...

    Building Leg Muscles

Part of what got me interested in lifting for power was looking at what type of work some sprinters were doing. Power is strength/time , basically that is what explosive athletic movement is all about. So if you want to lift in such a way to help your tennis game or other sport focusing on power...

    Building Leg Muscles

The people I referred to: Pavel and Jim Wendler have spent a lot of time in the Gym. Wendler played college football then went on to compete in power lifting. Pavel Tsatsouline is a former physical training instructor for the Soviet Special Forces, currently a subject matter expert to the U.S...

    Building Leg Muscles

There were actually two articles in that web page, the one by Pavel called Grease the Groove and another by someone that knows him that did an experiment with his methods, I believe you were quoting the second guy. To be honest I've lost track of specifically what we are debating, it might be a...
