So ostensibly Rafa had a problem playing in NYC with zero spectators. Said that NYC did "not have control of it". Yet he is now ready to play RG with thousands of spectators, while the number cases in Paris are far higher than NYC.

People have already pointed out that his main reason for missing the US Open was probably to avoid picking up an injury before the abbreviated clay season. But Covid-19 is a much better excuse to use, as no one can question that.
It's not that deep dude. People use excuses to take time off work all the time, even if the excuse used is more out of convenience. As ready made excuses go, coronavirus was a good one.

He was being disingenuous and used the virus as an excuse for skipping the USO and to attack America's handling of the virus. Making NYC out to be dangerous. You do not do that.
He attacked America's handling of virus but is now all too happy to travel to the virus epicenter of Paris! With thousands of spectators!
The hypocrisy is off the charts here.

In fuller comments he very much explained his injury fears. They were a big part it.
And if he considers NYC - the covid capital of 2020 - still too dangerous for him, who are we to judge?

Maybe it was a combination of both? Not fun to get the virus in another continent and also saving himself from injures? All in all seems like not the best feeling taking a chance on USO.

Interesting wording from Djokovic. I haven't read the interview so I don't know the context. But, I will say, Djokovic decided to get some match play so he could be match fit for RG, which must surely give him an advantage.
