Thank goodness I am not the only one who sees that grips on the serve is totally wrong, ground strokes look weird to me and who the guy, her coach? he looks like a guy who would be selling hot dog in the park.

Part of the problem with our sport is that you have to spend $4,000 a month to send a kid with talent to an academy.

Is that serve a reverse-slice?

Does the western grip naturally impart this?

My brother served with a Western grip for 20 years until he recently paid a teaching pro to correct it to continental.

If you are receiving in the ad court the side spin will cause the ball spin into your backhand if you are right handed.

i thought the same exact thing. the backhand is junk at the moment. i never understood people who hit western. i find it impossible to make a good shot. Eastern FTW.

looks like she was ripping the sh** out of the backhand in practice, againts her had it's like she didnt need to swing, so she just sliced.

She's a two star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net. This means that in comparison to the other very good players in the country... she's not that great. In order for her to be called the next Steffi Graf, she'd have to be at least a five star recruit... sorry...

Recruit rankings are VERY overrrated...Sampras as a junior was thought to be garbage by the USTA until he won the 1990 US Open...the rest is history.

this should be in junior player discussion. It's ridiculous of you to put it in pro player discussion. Is she ranked in the wta tour? no. She is still a junior

I know these two girls who are also tennis prodigy. Granted they are 11 and both ranked top ten in the country. They can compete at our boys highschool level.
This girl to no offence cannot unless she fixes her serve. Also when the game gets faster chippin and chopping turn into approach shots and easy sharp angle winners.

Sorry i would give their names for comparison in rankings(in the future) but they have asked i not put their name out for whatever reason.

She can crush her opponents with her thighs, literally. Yes, I say she is fat and grotesque. She reminds me of a really hungry, pissed off gorilla.

Does every thread having to do with WTA or black people have to turn into racist hate-fest on Serena? Oh and T_B, I bet you are a real looker yourself.

Actually, you are racist for simply implying my comments about Serena. I mentioned her thighs and that she reminds of a hungry, pissed-off gorilla. I never used color or anything else. Actually, there are other players who remind me of other things too, but we are simply talking about gorilla, I mean Serena.

Get off your high horse, if you can't handle the simple response then don't reply to it. Just ignore it. I am not the only one who mentions the word "gorilla". And why does it have to be interpreted as a racist comment. That's just stupid. Could it be the simple fact that I don't like her for her antics on the court. She grunts and glares, and scream her lungs out. That behavior is sure hell annoying. Yes, I don't watch her anymore because she's so damn annyoing. Other female players I don't like also include Jankovic, Sharapova, Safina, to name a few. I make fun of them too. Well, when I make fun of those players, am I being racist? That is just absurd, because I made fun of Serena, I am being a racist. But if I made fun of other players, than it's okay.

Isn't it double standards there. All players are there for the taking, in a sense that if they act really annoying, then viewers of tennis can make fun of them, regardless their skin color. You are just too stupid to know the difference. You simply assume that every time a person make fun of Serena, he/she is being racist, which is not always true.

I just simply don't like Serena, and I don't have to like her because she is black. Does that mean I am a racist because I don't like Serena?

Someone who as a teenager is still serving with a Western grip will win 22 slams? I guess womens tennis is destined to really go down the toilet to scarier proportions than even the biggest cynics could have imagined once the great Williams sisters depart the scene in that case.

why does it have to say black or african american? She's a girl thats it! Boy tennis sure has a lot of closeted racists!

Sampras as a junior was thought to be garbage by the USTA until he won the 1990 US Open...the rest is history.

That's a lie. The USTA always thought Sampras was going to be good (although not quite as good as he turned out - who could predict that) and there were a host of tennis pundits like Stolle, Necombe, Drysdale and Trabert raving about Sampras when he was only 14. EVERYONE thought he was going to be good.

There is no fire. No killer instinct. Her style is a grinding one but she doesn't have the build for it.

What kind of tennis coach throws balls? And that girl aint so special. In Estonia we have a 13 y/o girl, who won this years Estonian Championships in tennis. Yeah, sure, Kaia Kanepi and Maret Ani (the 2 best women tennisplayers of Estonia) didn't compete but still, at the age of 13. And her strokes are way more impressive than that "steffi graf" with a couch that throws balls.

What about this Brooke Austin? 96-4 holy crap

wow, now statistics don't lie. she has an amazing record and seems to defeating her opponents easily...2 and 1 in the finals of this tourny, scroll about 2/3 down for her pic

http://tinyurl.com/nqf8sy

That is impressive... she's also using a POGOS from what I can tell... very unusual to see a current junior using such a racquet.

My cousin's a rising 8th grader, and he's a 4 star recruit, only playing 3-4 national tourneys a year.

Next Andy Roddick?

I see a lot of potential in her strokes... hard to believe she's so young. Her BH looks better in this new video, too. She seems to be getting good racquet head speed on both sides.

Is she hitting with an eastern BH and SW FH? I notice she slightly rotates the grip when transitioning to her BH. If she was hitting with a full western FH and an Eastern BH... there would be no grip rotation.

Deja looks promising-- great instincts and movement.

As others have stated, her serve is her biggest liability not getting any torque from her lower body due to her serving hand dropping down too early, but she's only 13y.o. - she'll grow into that. If there was one 'right' technique we would all have the same mechanics-- but somethings come natural and other things we work on.

She will have to cover alot of court fast.. her forehand isn't compact yet -- if her opponents are good, they will be able to read that and react-- taking time away from her.

But I love her confidence at net, great touch-- she needs to build her game around that.. and that under-handed drop-shot on the forehand side is something you can't teach.

Keep at it Deja-- don't let rankings or wins/loses effect you too much... set a goal and stay on your path.

Fathers coaching...nooooooooooooooooooo

What I dont like from all this bussiness is that her father is coaching her in Sharapova style...Fathers must not be coaches...For that work there are proffessionals that will comply better with their function...
Fathers should simply watch at the side of the courts and should be banned as coaches...

Excellent Videos--Sista...

Dear Deja,

You have excellent groundstrokes. They look extremely heavy...lots of spin and velocity. I watched you hitting the wall and you have excellent racquet head speed. Much more so on your forehand, but your backhand looks much improved in the wall video vs. previous videos.

Your greatest weaknesses I see in your videos are your serves and your footwork. It is clear you are very fast and very strong...you move more like a safety or basketball player than a tennis player...its clear you are fast...and you move well, but I don't see you split-stepping and getting court position based on your shots. I guess for you, you are so quick it never really mattered...

What grip are you using on your serve? I doesn't look like a continental...I don't really see any pronation on those serves...but it could be the video. It looks like you are still in a western grip...you should really get a serve coach...but otherwise your game looks good...

Best of luck to you...

Really? I thought her footwork was very lazy.

Because fathers are fathers and coaches are coaches and I've noticed in all what I read and watched in this thread that her father knows of coaching as I know from cardiac surgery....and I repeat that being a father does not make you a proffessional coach...and Sharapova's carreer could have been much better if she had had a proffessional coach instead of her father....
Any particular reason why not?

I agree with you that her father is absolutely unscupulous aqnd he sells his daughter and all the money goes to his pocket...thats in part why fathers must be banned as coaches...
