2019 Wimbledon Grasserer Field

A lot of turmoil with the likes of Anderson, Cilic, Isner, Querrey, Berdych, and Delpo not playing or with virtually no grass play.

The Field Ranked:
1. Djokovic - clear #1
2. Federer - by Halle win and securing #2 seed
3. Nadal - improved first serve this year to go along with betterer 2nd serve make him very close to 1 and 2 in my mind
4. Anderson - only because he is the 4 seed and should have a good draw, very, very weak #4 and I'd rate him outside the top ten without the seed. Kandyman will have a chance to find form in the early rounds.
[Note: 5-17 are all fairly close so ymmv on ranking]
5. Felix Auger-Alliasime (FAA) - remarkable success so far on grass. Proved himself Thursday and Friday at Queens by beating Dimitrov and Kyrgios in five sets on Thursday and then disposing of Tsitsipas in 2. 30 aces against Dustin Brown. 25 in semi with Lopez at Queens with 18 through 4-1 in the 2nd set. Serve efficiency and enough of a return will allow him to go fairly deep. Seeded in 17-24 range.
6. Medvedev - really banged up right now with arm issue in Queens and holding back after three sets with Simon. The presumption is that rest will get him back a little more serve game which is the key for Medvedev going deep at Wimby. 11th seed, so only has to get by Thiem, Zverev, Tsits, or Nishikori and Med owns Tsitsipas
7. Tsitsipas - another player needing rest. Marginal return game on grass. Must avoid Medvedev and FAA.
8. Isner - no play recently and so hard to imagine him having a sharp enough return to repeat last year. 9th seed, maybe if he draws Thiem could make QF so by seeding I've moved him up to 8.
9. Goffin - back in form and gave Federer one good set, plus handled Berrettini nicely.
10. Berrettini - huge serve and big grass game, but Goffin was able to take time from him and outclass him from ground in Halle. Currently 17th seed. Let's say he somehow gets 16 and draws Anderson then very good chances to go deep.
11. Raonic - got some play in and he wants it, but even more lumbering than before from ground, still in best of 5 hard to dismiss
12. Cilic - not playing well this year which is why I have him down so low. As 13th seed probably needs to draw out of form Anderson
13. Khachanov -finding more and more form and played Berrittini well in their 2nd set at Halle
14. Nishikori - 8th seed and perhaps not playing any warmups will allow him a good Wimbledon
15. Bautista Agut - has a bit of a grass game and in some form. Took Federe 3 in Halle
16. Zverev - bizarre 2nd serve issues, but otherwise game is intact. Another player who might surprise with a week off finally after 10 events in a row plus doubles with Mischa.o_O
17. Feliciano Lopez - just won Queens, but not a great record at Wimbledon.
18. Thiem - only by virtue of improved serve game. 5th seed. Probably cannot handle big servers on this surface.
19. Struff - his improved grass game has looked mighty fine on grass; really playing well. Unseeded
20. Pouille - not playing horrible and has made QF before, plus made SF run at Auz Open showing he's developing the game for slams.
21. Berdych - another dangerous floater, but has not been playing at all so return bound to be suspect and many other aspects of game

Could be a great event if dark horses Medvedev and Tsitsipas recuperate well with the off week.

The dark horse may as well be a dark unicorn. When was the last time a dark horse won a slam? It has happened like twice in 15 years (2009 and 2014 USO).

too hard for me to comment. need to wait for the draw.

what i can say is:

Wawrinka was a dark horse too. probably even less than that.

...and that Kyrgios is missing on the list. may have to do with him being unseeded, still. 8-B is missing there

Nah Wawrinka crushed Murray at the USO and pushed Novak to the absolute brink at both hard court slams the year before. Big 4 were dominating, but it's not like he came out of nowhere. If anything he was the standout 5th most likely to win.

Nick hasnt made a QF in four and a half years

Combined with his deteriorating mental faculties

2nd round would be a resounding success

if we look at the Wimbly semifinalists outside the big 3, of the last 3 years:
Raonic, Cilic, Anderson, Querrey, Isner, Berdych*

one has to ask: which servebots will make it this time around? :censored:

*Berdych has the weakest serve while he's the cleanest ballstriker out of these 6, but the quick surface aids his serve while his game is still pretty basic, so he's very close to a servebot on grass.
