Australia has named their first team with new coach Hewitt.
It features; Tomic, Kyrgios, Groth and Peers!
Very happy they finally chose Peers to play DC after him being overlooked for years (due to Australia having too many choices, not cause he did anything wrong). Peers is now a top 10 doubles player and will most likely partner Groth in doubles. They partnered each other in Sydney and reached the QF. 21st ranked Tomic and 32nd ranked Kyrgios will probably play singles.
Americas team will likely include the Bryan brothers, Querrey, Sock and Isner.

Groth loses first round to Tursonov who's ranked in the 1000's. Not a good year for him so far at all.
Kyrgios defeated Klizan in Dubai.
Millman to play top seeded Ferrer in Acapulco shortly and 5th seed Tomic to play Rajeev Ram who defeated him last point.

Tomic's draw has opened up in Acapulco with 3rd seed Cilic losing to qualifier Harrison. Tomic is in need of points. He is defending 45 points here in Acapulco as he reached the QF here last year, 80 points for his 2 Davis Cup match wins (next week) and then the following week he's defending 180 points at Indian Wells following his Masters QF result there last year. Big 3 weeks coming up for Tomic. Could lose up to 305 points if he doesn't win a match and that will see him go from 21st to 27th in the rankings.

Great stuff this week.
Kyrgios has reached the QF in Dubai and will have a rematch with Berdych who he defeated last week in Marseille. If he wins that, he'll likely face Stanimal.
Tomic has reached the QF in Acapulco and will face either qualifier Harrison or Marchenko. Winnable match but Harrison was a semifinalist here last year and has big points to defend. No seeds left in Tomic's half so good chance to reach the final. His likely SF opponent would be Dolgo who defeated him last time they met.

Another top 10 win for Nick, again over Berdych. The live rankings have Nick at 26th so looks like he's pretty much secured a seeding spot at Indian Wells. (If he plays, we already know how he hates tennis and warns to limit his schedule). I'd say he's probably got a top 32 ranking for quite a few months.

Kyrgios not saying as much as damn in his last match? Bernie fighting back to take a match in straight sets?

Maybe along with the detection of gravity waves we've ended up in a parallel universe (or maybe just New Zealand)

Davis Cup should be interesting ....

Earlier than wanted exit for Nick at Dubai gives him an extra day to rehab the balky back for DC. Let's hope he's 100% for Kooyong. Moving to grass should be less shock on his muscles there.

Tomic and Querrey are still alive in Acapulco. A Saturday final there between them is a possibility. If so, will they jet together across the Pacific???

Congrats to Jordan Thompson for winning the Cherbourg Challenger title! The fifth-seeded Sydney native rallied from a set down vs #6 Adam Pavlasek (CZE) to win his first Challenger title (0-3 in finals prior to Sunday) 4-6 6-4 6-1 and moved to a career-high #123 in the rankings.

Good ol Australian media. Being hated would be really hard when you're playing for your nation. Pathetic

Time to rebound from the DC debacle with some good results at IW. The qualies start Tuesday with four lads from Oz in the fray:

Matt Reid vs #1 Yuichi Sugita

Ben Mitchell vs #3 Pierre Hughes Herbert

#6 John Patrick Smith vs Jason Jung

Matthew Barton vs #18 Ryan Harrison

Should Smith and Barton win, they will face each other for a main draw spot.

Beat me too it! I'd been refreshing the wiki page waiting for the qualy draw but got distracted by the latest episode of the 100 (awesome show by the way).

Anyway surprised to see so many Aussies. I only expected JP Smith in qualies. Barton had a good start to the year defeating Kudla in Auckland qualies and Steve Johnson (ranked in the 30s then) in the 1R before losing to Ferrer. He also reached the SF of a challenger tournament last week.
Hope JP Smith qualifies, he's such a great guy. Facing Jason Jung who we know from his posts on this forum!. Barton could face JP Smith in the 2nd/final round of qualifying.
Matt Reid hasn't won a singles match this year losing at qualies in Brisbane and Sydney and a challenger in Launceston.
Ben Mitchell had a good end to 2015 with a challenger title and a futures title and reached the final of the AO wildcard playoff but withdrew to be with his baby mama as she gave birth. Hasn't had much luck this year though.

Can't believe the Americans won.

(And I'm American.)

I really did expect the Aussies to take it.

Now do they have to do playoffs at some point against Belgium to stay in the World Group?

My surprise is that Jordan Thompson has opted to skip IW after his recent Challenger title in Cherbourg. His #123 ranking would have earned the #6 seed in qualies. Instead, he's playing the Zhuhai Challenger in China and is the #3 seed. JT just won his 1R match over Ramanathan 7-6 7-5.

Really? I didn't expect the Aussies to take it, especially once Nick was out of the draw.
We have playoffs in September, the week after the US Open. We could face any of the 7 other nations that got defeated. (Japan, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Poland, Canada, Germany or Belgium).

Very strange, Matty Ebden as well. He's fought his way back to a good ranking and now at 104 yet not playing?

Also gonna go check out the entry list to see who's playing in Indian Wells besides Tomic/Kyrgios. Wonder if Groth and Millman are?

Edit: Just looked and Groth is on the entry list but not Millman :(

Also Kokkinakis said he'll be out for a few more months. His ranking will drop big time, he reached the 4R of Indian Wells last year so that's quite a lot of points to lose for someone ranked in the 100s!

Another edit:
Where has Duckworth been? Just looked at rankings and he's down to 159th!

Agreed top 10 player tomic should have been able to beat servebot isner

Tomic, 17th seed faces either Rajeev Ram or a qualifier. Tomic lost to Ram 1R Delray but beat him the following week in the 1R of Acapulco. If he wins that he'll likely face Raonic in the 3R. Raonic beat him in Brisbane but Raonic hasn't played since the AO due to injury so fingers crossed Tomic wins.

24th seed Kyrgios faces either Chung or Ramos in 2R then faces likely Monfils. If he wins that he'll likely face 2nd seed Murray in the 2R.

Groth will face Mayer 1R, if he can win that he'll face 20th seed Troicki who he defeated last year. 3R would likely be against 10th seed Cilic.

JPS down in straight sets 3&4 to Jung.

Excuse me, I need to go down to the cellar to break out the vintage Dom Perignon.

Looks like Kyrgios and Tomic are still dealing with injuries. Tomic getting scans on his wrist after his match against Raonic tomorrow and is likely set to miss the Miami Masters. And Kyrgios apparently hasn't recovered from the illness which saw him skip DC. (Why go to Indian Wells if you haven't recovered? Stupid). So he might be in doubt for Miami too.

Bad week for all Aussies.
In Miami, Kyrgios was out 2R to Ramos, Tomic lost 3R to Raonic. Millman lost 2R to Johnson and Groth lost 1R to Mayer
Tomic is not playing Miami next week but looks like Kyrgios and Groth are, maybe Millman too?

In the challenger side of things this week, even worse.
JP Smith lost 1R at the Irving Classic to Istomin.
Blake Mott, Ben Mitchell, Omar Jasika and Matthew Barton all lost 1R at Drummondville Challenger in Canada.
Luke Saville and Jordan Thompson lost 1R at the Guangzhou challenger
The only person to win a match on the challenger tour this week was Matosevic who is now playing qualies for challengers, didn't realize his ranking was in the 400s! He's currently playing Jaziri in the 2R but is down a set. Jaziri is ranked like 330 spots higher then him.

Well Kyrgios was able to take advantage of his cakewalk draw and has reached his first Masters QF. As a result he will hit a career high 22nd in the world. Only 2 spots behind Aussie number 1 Tomic.

Kyrgios defeated #40 Baghdatis, #131 Smyczek and #51 Kuznetsov.
What an easy draw. Faces #12 Raonic next.

Just a comparison cause why not. When Tomic reached the QF of the Shanghai Masters last year he defeated #42 Verdasco, #8 Ferrer and #11 Gasquet and then played #1 Djokovic in the QF.

Nick has had a dream draw but even still it's no surprise his best runs have come when he keeps his mouth shut and concentrates on tennis.

Also nice to see Omar Jasika and JP Smith doing well in the doubles.

The lefties got a WC, won their first match 12-10 in the super-breaker over two slam dubs champions Zimonjic and ERV, then cruised in straights over Marrero/Paire. QFs today vs the Bryans.

Kyrgios through to his first Masters SF. I'm gonna take a guess and say it's the last time an Aussie was in the SF of a Masters since Hewitt 2007 Cincinnati Masters.
Kyrgios now the highest ranked Australian (male and female), overtakes Tomic to debut in the top 20 for the first time at number 20!

For those like me looking towards the next few weeks/tournaments.
ATP250 tournaments next week. Mens clay court championships- no Aussies entered (Millman withdrew). Marrakesh Open- no Aussies entered

Following week is the Monte-Carlo Masters. Tomic is entered and is 2 ranking spots off being seeded (current live rankings), just needs one top 20 player to withdraw and he'll be seeded. Looks like Nick isn't entered, perhaps he might take a wildcard? He didn't play the tournament last year though either. No other AUS players showing on the site either

#18 if he wins his SF; #15 if he wins it all.
