add add * Somdev qualifies for Legg Mason Tennis Classic

Washington, Aug 3 (PTI) Somdev Devvarman erased a one-set deficit to stun the second seed Josselin Ouanna and make the main draw of the USD 1,402,000 Legg Mason Tennis Classic here.

The ninth seed Indian beat his French opponent 2-6 6-1 7-5 in the second and final qualifying round.

He will face fellow qualifier Yuichi Sugita in the first round of the main draw of the hard court event.

If he crosses the first hurdle, he will face sixth seed Croat Marin Cilic, who got bye in the opening match, in the second round.

i was at that match. somdev lulled the frenchman to sleep with hundreds of slow spinny crosscourt shots and eventually the ouanna lost due to tons of unforced errors.

Why does this Somdev guy get so much hype on here? he's crap.

hardly crap.. but his ranking will be between 60-150 for his career. do not see him doing any better.

he is hyped out here because:
1) he is a 2 time NCAA champ?
2) only indian player in top 150 or so? though he will soon be upstaged by yuki bhambri who was ITF junior #1 sometime last year.

yeah everyone not ranked in the top 5 is a crap tennis player.

Well, I will have you know that according to the keyboard jockeys here at TTW that is exactly the case. The very fact that anyone on this board calls Somdev crap makes me think certain people have never picked a racquet before in their lives.

I think you meant anyone not playing in the 90s is crap. GS even joked on Nadal for losing to Soderling after winning 4 straight RG titles.

That said, great win for Devvarman. Surprising result, to see him take out Cilic, who's having a good year, in straights.

He won his first round match 6-0, 7-6 (6) against Yuichi Sugita. So many people beat up on Somdev but hes an excellent player. He might not ever be #1 in the world, but hes a hard worker and could have success in the pros.

@whatsgood4u

Its called being consistent. Somdev isn't that big of a guy so he relies on consistency and counter punching to win.

I root for him because I watched him in college at the national indoors in Chicago and saw a very hard worker and genuine love of the game. (He smiled.)

Maybe people like to root for nice-guy underdogs? Underdog because he's not a big strong overpowering athlete and also because he's asian, a minority on the tour for sure!
