Am I tennis addicted ?

Hey everyone!

I just posted my first-ever YouTube video. I am documenting my journey as an amateur tennis player who started playing in 2020.

I'm obsessed with improving my game and I would greatly appreciate any advice, tips, or feedback from fellow tennis enthusiasts like me.

No doubt you are, but that is just normal as the universe of tennis is pretty amazing. You probably improved fast exactly because of that.

The only tip i give is master the topspin, that is the heart of the modern game that many many rec players neglect, for the one who understands the topspin will hardly miss an attack.

This is very fast development for someone who never played before! What sports did you play before this, and at what level?

2 years and already have good attacking OHBH. Somebody gets Curious over here.
Hello,

Thank you, I'm not sure if it's good yet, but I've definitely improved from where I started. I used to rely on my slice about 90% of the time, but now I feel more comfortable when my opponent hits to my backhand side.

Footwork, conditioning and movement are terrific. Volleying needs work.
Hello,
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, I recognize that this is an area where I need to improve my game. Up until now, I have primarily focused on my forehand and backhand, but I plan to work on my net game more as well

Hello,

Thank you for your comment. To clarify, I used to play football mostly on the streets with my friends, as there were no trainers or clubs available.

As I got older, I played twice a week and occasionally participated in small leagues and tournaments with 4+1 players. In my 20s, I frequented the gym a lot, and a few years ago, I ran regularly for a year to prepare for a half marathon.

Nowadays, I run occasionally, mostly for the purpose of improving my tennis skills.

From an early age, I felt a strong connection with sports and having the right mindset. Unfortunately, I never pursued sports professionally, but I am determined to achieve my "dreams" now with tennis, to be the best I can be :)

Started at 30 vs started at 46. Big difference even though both officially adults.

Meh - not sure age has as much to do with it rather than innate athletic ability. I've got a buddy that became a 4.0 player after 18 months of 4 day/week practice and he started when he was 45. Excellent athlete, however.

It's not for a good athlete, seen it a number of times myself. Compared to an adult who has little to no athletic ability of course - but then that person will never get out of the 3.5 level even after years of practice.

football/soccer players i find make the easiest transition to tennis, mainly because their footwork (especially the rhythm of moving and loading) and spacing to a fast moving ball is already highly developed.... and they are hyper fit (vs. the avg out of shape 3.0-4.5)... it's hard for me to remember an ex-football player that got fat (maradona comes to mind... but in my day to day life, all the soccer players i know are still in good shape, and even still play).

Good luck!

Unlike you, I started playing tennis a bit later in life (stared in my late 40s). I really didn't start to improve until I started to take weekly private lessons in 2019. My tennis improvement routine includes: weekly private lesson, weekly drill/hitting sessions, and match play (singles and doubles).

Just curious. When you started your private lessons did you make some grip changes to get rid of some bad habits? I think that almost everyone who starts out completely on their own will not get correct grips for each of the different shots.

Yes.

The reason why I started to take private lessons was to learn how to hit topspin. Before that, I could only hit a slice backhand and slice forehand. I believe both ground stokes were in the continental grip, but I'm not 100% sure. I also had a weak dink style serve, and I'm not sure what grip I was using.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. Now that you have your grips right you don't have any unnecessary limits on how good you might eventually become. And your experience hitting the slice ground strokes is not wasted. Topspin can be your main shots but there are situations when some slice is a better choice. It's great to have a complete arsenal.
