An interesting idea re: on-court screaming

An alternative way to address on-court screaming by the likes of Sharapova, Azarenka etc.... Let them do it.

But let the crowd be as loud as they want also.

If it's good enough for players to distract their opponents then they can't really complain much that crowd noise hinders them.

Perhaps the US Open has the right idea. Tennis is entertainment and it's one of the only sports where crowds are hushed - and because of tradition basically. Sure, there is a concentration aspect of it but that notion is already rendered irrelevant by the player's own noise-making when it comes to Sharapova etc.

You may be on to something here.

Too many tennis fans have become resigned to the screaming and grunting, even though they hate it.

Maybe a chorus of obnoxious screams from obnoxious fans will have the WTA hierarchy reconsider.

So I nominate YOU to organize others and begin this practice at the 2/19 tour stop in Memphis.

I expect you will generate enough grassroots support that the practice will pick up momentum at Indian Wells, with a tidal wive of support by Miami.

By the French Open the practice of shrieking will be banned, and you will be forever famous as "Bobby Jr, the fan of that shook the tennis world".

[For those who think I'm kidding, I would be the first to shake Bobby's hand.]

I'm booked up for the next few months unfortunately ha ha but anyone is free to develop the idea and run with it.

In all seriousness, I was just thinking about the *quiet please* protocol expected of fans after a match last week where a player complained that a fan had called the ball out and distracted him (forgot which match - maybe Berdych vs Nadal??). If that had happened during a Sharapova/Azarenka match there would have been more than a little irony as they spend every point doing it to each other.

So, maybe the answer isn't asking the players to change their habits, rather saying we'll match you. And I'm not suggesting fans do it against the organisers wishes - but that the organisers say let's try it and see what happens. At least that would be attempting something.

While we're at it, why don't we give members of the crowd watching the match tennis balls that they can hurl at the player screaming during the rally. Or better still, tomatoes. That way, at any given moment, the players will be weary of getting drilled by a projectile from the crowd and out of shear fear, keep their mouths closed during every rally.
