Analyzing your game DURING A MATCH

The other day I was playing a practice match at my club. I was playing okay except for one thing, my second serve. It was absolutely awful. I seriously don't think I have ever double faulted so much. I tried to hit two second serves for almost the whole match, but that didn't really help much. I was double faulting 2 times every game when usually I double fault two time a set. I am really proud of my second serve because I have really worked on it and I think it is really good compared to most people my age (14). Anyways, my coach told me that I wasn't leading with the edge of the racquet, which is something I normally don't have trouble with. I was just wondering if anyone has some advice as to how I can pick up these things before I double fault 20 times. Thanks

Any shot you don't OWN before you get out on the court and in a match is a shot that is at risk of breaking down. So, practice your serve. If you use more slice on the second serve then practice that motion. At your age you should be able to hit 100 each day. When I was in high school I would have serve/receive focus days. I would hit serves for 30 minutes, then receive for 30 minutes, then hit serves for another 30 minutes. Of course, you must practice the motion properly. The web has hundreds of service videos. Study them, pick a guy-like Sampras-then model him. Uh, don't pick Dementieva. :)

Good luck.

To piggy-back on chess9's post ... I suggest you *might* have problems taking your practice performance to the *match court.* (You may practice better than you play.)

Do a SEARCH on "Game Based Drills" here. There are some super pointers on how to "practice pressure" and take your grooved strokes to the match court too.

Do you know how to do a topspin serve? If you know how to do it, it should make your second serve more consistent. But if you're off and timid, a lot of balls will end up going into the net. So what is your second serve like now? Is it one of those frying pan-try to pop it in-serves?
