Funny and heartwarming from the big man:

More from Andy Murray, who seemed to be struggling to hold back tears:

"And finally I'd like to thank all the public who voted, for giving me so much support over the last couple of years. It has made a huge difference. I know sometimes I'm not the easiest person to support but I've had a lot of pressure on me for a long time. I'm glad I managed to do it.

"No matter how excited I try to sound my voice always sounds boring - that's just my voice, I'm sorry! I'm very excited right now! Thank you very much everyone."

A well deserved award for Murray, breaking one of British sport's most painful and frustrating hoodoos, and really never in any doubt since the Wimbledon final over 5 months ago. Of course this year he also reached an Australian Open final and won the Miami Masters, Queen's and Brisbane, but even if he hadn't won a single match outside of Wimbledon all year, he still would have won the award.

Pretty tough on Farah to miss out on the top 3 for second year in a row, despite another double gold medal triumph at a global athletics meet.

Well deserved, very happy for him.

The whole live-feed was a total c0ck up though.

Him being in the shower, sound delay, his team awkwardly smiling in the background, he kind of treated the trophy hand over like a tennis final presentation - I think they were expecting him to give a lengthy speech instead of just grinning with the trophy to the screen.

But fair play to Murray, cracked a few jokes by taking the mick out of his own personality and voice.

was thrilled until I saw Rusedaski was a previous winner and I lost quite a bit of momentum

He won SPOTY for being runner up at the US Open...

No disrespect to Greg, but it was obvious that successful British sportsmen or women were pretty thin on the ground back in 1997 if the award could go to someone who was only a runner-up in a big sporting event, not an actual winner!

Still, British tennis players making Grand Slam finals has not exactly been a commonplace in the last four decades!

Must say I'm a little worried about those suggesting that Mo Farah was ignored from the voting for being a Somali immigrant. Britain has a long history of middle and long distance running greatness, -Cram, Ovett, Foster, Coe, Bannister etc. While Mo Farah is going to mentioned alongside those in history he is not as stand out as the country's finest tennis player in 75 years. Chris Froome actually seems less British to me than Mo Farah- Mo grew up here, understands the culture and is a proud Brit in so many ways.

Well deserved. A wimbledon winner was always going to SPOTY after the long drought.

The big achievement is that despite failing so many times, he didn't give up. He should inspire anyone who has tried and failed, working harder to get the job done. Bravo to Andy and the whole crew who had to put up with the miserable git.

I actually thought it was great Jez and the boys came out from behind the camera :):) That wasn't planned either, neither was Martina!

Loved the post Batz!

there will be a follow-up.

Bless him, he's just not comfortable in front of a camera and the time delay between Miami and the UK didn't help him.

Well done to him though. Britain has produced a few contenders over the years, but now we have someone who can actally win slams.

i won't lie: i hesitated.

but after a deep reflexion, i finally came to the conclusion that haggis was too 'charismatically disgusting' to be properly illustrative of this thread's topic.

I never knew something (or someone) could be 'charismatically disgusting'!
'Disgustingly charismatic' maybe? :)
