she is the player who publicly 'came out' earlier in the year..

very talented, had a few injuries which has limited her singles career but has done very well in doubles this year playing with Ashleigh Barty, a former junior GS champ (I think she's still only 16 or so)

Lastly, they mentioned Jelena Dokic. Is that Djokovic's fiance? Or is that Jelena Ristic?

Jelena looks like a common name in Eastern Europe.

you're a little young, so I'll forgive you the Jelena Dokic ignorance.. (she did make it to number 4 in the world in her prime, though, so maybe a google would have saved you on that one?)

Is Sarah Tomic in the draw? I would have though she would be playing the Junor tournament instead (Bernard's sister)

I watched the Reid-Santillan match yesterday and this Santillon kid seems to have a good potential but he seemed tired after few games (so need to work on his fitness-normal) and his game seemed destructured, he only played "shots" here and there instead of real point construction.

I hate to complain because I'm happy it's streaming at all, but I find it frustrating watching without the score of the game visible.

I was there today and saw both the Duval and Kudla matches.

Duval's opponent essentially beat herself with Duval mostly looking on. Sanchez had lots of unforced errors. She was hitting much harder than Duval although Duval had moments of inspired tennis. On several occasions Duval was a blur of arms and legs making incredible shots. She injured herself, had her knee wrapped, and still won as Sanchez self-imploded.

Sanchez also suffered a few bad line calls by one particular judge which got to her. She got distracted by, and obsessive with, line calls and seemed to play "po'ed" after that.

The Kudla-Jenkins match started out impressively and then Jenkins faded in the second set. He seemed to lose confidence in his serve and had several double faults going down 6-1.

Going back for the semi-finals tomorrow.

Since Kudla and Duval won today and we have tickets for the main court I think it will be their semi-final matches. Ladies play at 1:00, men at ~3:00. When I checked the site earlier this evening they had not yet posted the order of play.

Tickets are only $15 for bleacher seats and there's not a bad seat given the tiny size of the facility. It's basically high school-style pull put bleacher seats covering a court next to the court being played upon. Very uncomfortable seating but the cheapest way possible to see this level of play from virtually courtside. And there were very few people there today, so no crowds to fight.

I was so impressed by Tennys' comeback in the second set to win it. I was sure we were looking at three sets, but he just dug in and got it done. I hope he wins tomorrow.

An amazing comeback and hard won. Both players showed such determination.

It was very unlike Duval's matches in which the opponents seemed to collapse in frustration. Meanwhile, Duval demonstrated such calm and focus.

All of these players have amazing tennis skills. What really seems to separate them is their ability to play their game despite all manner of distractions, annoyances, and disappointments. Where her opponents would become frustrated or angry at their own errors or calls they believed to be in error Duval maintained her composure and nerve.

Both of Duval's opponents hit harder and served far harder than she did. But both unraveled emotionally. Duval demonstrated that steely resolve we see in much higher ranked champions.

My 12-year old so enjoyed the experience he insisted that we go back tomorrow for the finals. We have family in-bound for the holidays and need to prepare but I've decided to take him back anyway.

EDIT: And once again I'm amazed at what a poor job ESPN and other networks do in conveying the sense of speed and power present in today's tennis. Sitting just a few yards from the court and just a few feet above court level I'm once again amazed at how much faster and intense professional tennis is when viewed live compared to television. The words that come to mind when viewing pros live at court level: savage, vicious, and visceral. When viewed on TV: sedate, deliberate, and placid. Sometimes they show a decent camera angle that conveys the intensity of the game, and then that brief moment is gone and they go back to the staid old view.

Is it because of the camera angle? Cincy had really good camera positioning.

I'm just referring to TV tennis coverage in general and it is mostly camera angle. I don't know what these matches looked like on live stream since I haven't seen the streams.

Other sports seem to be taking advantage of camera technoloy to provide new and more interesting camera angles, especially racing.

For TV tennis coverage my favorite angle is roughly from one of the corners, a sort of 3/4 view. From that perspective you can see net clearance, spin, and pace and still see where the ball is bouncing and how the players are positioned. I remember Cliff Drysdale commenting on the same camera angle shown briefly during one of the majors this year. But it was only in passing and he stated how much he liked it and how he wished they used it more.

The standard camera angle from well above and beyond a baseline kills any sense of net clearance, spin, and pace. There's no conveying the amazing feat of modern pro tennis with the standard view. Given the incredible pace of ground strokes it's awe inspiring how pro tennis players manage to get in position and strike the ball so cleanly.

After having seen several pro matches now I find it incredibly amusing to see TT members compare 5.0 males to top female players. Not even close.

100% correct. Getting close to court level at pro matches (ATP & WTA) is a true eye opener. If you haven't done it, try it. You'll ask yourself if you're playing the same sport.

Great post, 3/4 view is where you want to be live too, you get it all the guts, the glory, and defeat. Also, all the stuff you named above.:)

I don't bother with ESPN, Killer is a legend as is Cliffie but they are only as good as the pictures they get presented with. ESPN could do it but it costs money(good cameras) and effort. Easy to go with what they know, are given.

The live stream is average on this one, Oz Open playoffs in Melbourne was better but to be fair, they have had more practice.

Mike from USTA live stream is great, but he is not doing this one.

Importantly though, live & up close and personal, 3/4 kills it, you really feel and see how athletic all the players are. I am glad I am not playing anymore...but it is still great to watch.

Also glad to read you got a 12yr old kid who loves it so much he wants to go back.
