BTW, I am a USPTA-certified Rec Coach with Safeplay and Background check, and will be upgraded to Tennis Instructor next year. You can safely learn killer forehands from me.
Great news for American tennis.
We can look forward to a few slams in 2021 and beyond.

Though I have never taught a single real lesson (not required for this level of certification - only mock lessons in a workshop)

MyTennisLessons states "Customers can also purchase an up to date criminal background check on any coach prior to booking" on their site. Hopefully if they state this, they've done one.?

US Gulab Jamun Association?
wow, I thought those were only rumours from haters.

may I ask you what is Safeplay and Background check in relationship to Gulab Jamun Instructor?

Imagine a background check on saboosh revealing that he was caught driving under the influence of gulabjamun syrup, and WhatsApp messages revealing that he was recommending the same to his proteges, and finally once arrested for dropping a volley in the grand canyon.

imagine alternatively a background check where El-Magnifique hits FH with more pace and RPM then Nadal, and all that without any footwork preparation.
now imagine how his FH would look like if he focused on it.

i don't think either have done one for me. i'm guessing that they don't want to spend the money... so they'll charge customers on request. never even saw that statement, thx for sharing.

There are a lot of very creepy people out there ... I would prefer that most are far away from me. Usually if screened by a club I get to work with the least creepy. How many are free-lancing because they can't pass a background check?
austintennis2005 is available to coach.
ive found some of the things you said to be true. but if they send me a client great if not then i wasnt expecting anything from them anyway. im not out anything and they actually sent me a good client.... a very cute young lady to boot.

is your creep-dar broken?
call the guy, if you get a bad vibe, bail out.
if the location/time is desolate, bail out... choose a busy location.
when you meet the guy, if you get bad vibe, bail out.

I . . . I mean . . . do you have daughters? Would you advise your daughter to rely on her "creep-dar" to determine whether a guy is a creep or a threat? Gosh, I hope not.

Predators are often successful precisely because they can outwit a person's "creep-dar."

Sure, meet in public places, take precautions, do your homework, etc. But "creep-dar" is not a great substitute for choosing a pro who is well-known and comes recommended by people you know.

A friend some years ago was subletting her apartment and a perfectly nice guy showed up to see the place, then began to disrobe. That is when her "creep-dar" told her she should run for her life.

i teach her to follow her gut instinct (enteric nervous system!)... if she doesn't feel comfortable in any situation, bail out. doesn't matter if it's a social faux pas... you can apologize for that later.
not fool proof, but a first line of defense. (most people ignore it for fear of embarrasment)

of course it can backfire... a buddy mine a long time ago, buys a new car... one of the first new cars that had automatic locks that engage when you drive away.... fast forward to a bar scene, meets a girl, she agrees to let him drive her home... she gets in, and of course the locks engage as he drives off... she starts screaming... he tries to explain, but by the time he stopped the car, she was gone...

anywho... i don't see why someone smart can use pyc or mtl to find a list of coaches, AND also get a list of references (and if i were a female, i'd specifically request references from other females). recommendations from friends are always best but not everyone has that. i'd argue most newbies don't have that. that said, i've definitely gotten word of mouth recommendations, but someone had take to that first chance in the friend chain... anywho, sounds like pyc & mtl are not for you.

seems like the ladies are, so i can empathize (even as i guy i've run into my fair share of creepy people).
that said there's still lots of ways to mitigate risk.... and if that's not enough, just go to a club/brick&mortar as someone suggested.

Get a female coach then Ladies. I dunno, all the lessons I teach are in the middle of the day around lots of people at a school or park court. You’re much worse off going jogging in Central Park at dusk tbh. If you can afford to join a club and overpay two, three times as much for the piece of mind as security. Creepy people get hired at clubs too, lol.

I hate to use this as an example but that POS Larry Nasser was a highly established Olympic coach with loads of credentials who worked with dozens of USA champions. Apparently no background check was done on him.
i wasn't going to mention him specifically, but yeah, there are plenty of cases where people are put into an public authority positions (coach, teacher, etc...), and still doesn't protect the student, or in some cases, makes it worse because the authority figure has a reputation (ie. who will believe the student? ie. parents/peers implicitly trust the auth figure), has more isolated access to students, etc...

but in the end, people have different comfort levels, and they have to follow their own path.

Hey, free advertising. That’s how I look at it. I never messed w/ Thumbtack or tennislessons.com as they make you purchase tokens to speak to “leads”, who even knows if they are real people or not. PYC and MTL have sent me loads of clients I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.
have you seen an uptick in clients this spring/summer/fall?
historically (last couple years) i only managed say 2-3 students weekly
this year, i was teaching up to 10 students regularly/weekly (i had to turn many away because they needed prime time hours (eg. after 5p M-F), but court time was tough to get because a general uptick in tennis interest).
also, was public court time tough for you to get? at some point i was getting complaints from folks if i had back to back lessons during prime hours (eg. after 5p M-F), so i started avoiding those hours.

Yeah for sure,Summer is always my busiest time, and after the shutdown people were eager to get outdoors. I like to teach early mornings like, 6, 7am or 2 in the afternoon when courts are free. Had to wait a few minutes for courts a few times but it’s no biggie.

Well, the other women on this thread can speak for themselves. I will tell you a story that illustrates the gender disparity in how men and women view issues of personal safety.

I was out with my adult son and daughter while we were on vacation in a foreign country. Walking around. A little later at night than we had intended. A little more lost than we had intended. In an area that was a little more deserted than we intended. We were getting that spooked feeling you get when that sort of thing happens.

My son said, "This must be what it's like to be a woman. I feel like a deer at a salt lick. "

i get it. crazies out there.
i won't even let my wife walk the dog (and he's 75lbs) alone after dark, and our neighborhood isn't even remotely "dangerous".

Lots of desperate people now because of the pandemic. Nextdoor app has several postings about people stalking people leaving homes to steal parcels, checking out parked cars, etc. Aid relief money has dried up and they have no jobs.

Let me reiterate my original reply : RUBBISH--get off the tennis courts at the exclusive clubs and spend some time on the streets--better yet invite "the poor family" into your home to live with U.

The only 2 exclusive tennis clubs I go to are by invitation - when they need a second or fourth - and that has not happened since March obviously

ok, i might be opening a can of worms... and that's ok, maybe i'll learn something...
i usually hate agreeing with suresh, but in this case his ideas seem to have merit...
a quick google shows me this:
  • Poverty.
  • Peer Pressure.
  • Drugs.
  • Politics.
  • Religion.
  • Family Conditions.
  • The Society.
  • Unemployment.
  • Deprivation
  • Unfair judicial system
not saying that other factors mentioned: catch&release, defund-the-police - are not factors... but seems that too does not explain the big picture.
i get concerned about high unemployment (via pandemic biz shut downs, job automation, etc...)... especially if folks are living paycheck to paycheck (and now the next stim stuck in limbo)

@tennis tom
@5sets

your thoughts?

(granted, as a ny'er i recognize i might be unconsciously biased blue even though i'm registered indy,... but i too am not happy with leaders like diblasio)
Yeah I see where you are coming from. I don’t think we can base the raising crime rates on solely one thing, but I think Police are now afraid to do just that, “police”. NYC hasn’t looked this bad since the crack epidemic in the Eighties. I mean why would criminals care if they can just go around raping and stealing and Blasio will let them back out on the streets the next day.
In terms of the Pandemic, that’s kind of a parallel issue because all of us are stir crazy after being told to sit at home for three months. That certainly doesn’t give me the excuse to break into someone’s car because my stimulus check hasn’t arrived.

The most hilarious part of this thread is watching men try to mansplain to a woman why being a woman meeting up with a stranger they contacted over the internet is no big deal. After all, they aren’t creeps themselves, right? So no reason for her to worry. Lol.

Lol, nobody’s making them do it. Let them go to a country club and pay $130. Not going to make me lose any sleep. But don’t sign up and then complain.
