backhand backswing question:

I hit my 2hbh relatively slow compared to my forehand, and im often caught hitting late on that side also. I know about the looping backswing on the forehand, but i cant seem to do it on the backhand side (it's much faster for me to do a straight takeback).

The problem is that when i use a straight takeback, my backhand is flatter, and in order to keep it in more consistantly, im forced to hit it a little bit softer.

I need some tips on how to loop the backswing on my backhand, and any tips on hitting heavy topspin on mid-high balls. Any advice will help me (except relaxing the wrists and "pulling+pushing", because i've tried that and it works on low balls well but on high balls i get more of an inside out spin)

Watch Safin, doesn't really loop on the way back, just a big shoulder turn and a little lift of the wrists to lift the racket head above his hands on completion. This allows him to drop the racket head and create a little "loop" down on the way forewards and extend his top hand/arm through contact. Best backhand on tour.

By the sounds of it the fact when you use a straight takeback it you hit flatter, this isn't the takeback it's the path forward and probably you're not releasing your hands through contact (golfing term I know!). In this context release means turning your top hand over your bottom hand through and after contact. Make sure you extend the hands towards the target and if you've released correctly the tip of the racket will be pointing up and slightly away to your right (assuming you're a righty) before you wrap around to finish. This is my best guess based on what you you've stated so far. Posting pic/s or video will help more.

Hope it helps

I suggest getting some videos of some of the good 2HBH players; Safin, Hewitt, Roddick and others. Study them to see which ones are something you'd like to emulate and get to a backboard and start hitting.

In general, many 2HBHs don't generate much topspin compared to 1HBHs.

The great virtues of it are not topspin but rather ; simplicity/consistency, 2 handed power, you can hit from an open stance giving you more time, and ... you can hit much later than a 1HBH (also giving you more time) since your back arm is a major power source.

Roddick!!! Not a great watch!!! Safin, Grosjean or Agassi wold be much better bets than Roddick. I'm not a big fan of Hewitt either - arms are a bit straight at the back.

I'd have to disagree with some of this. I don't think Roddick or Hewitt are good examples to follow to learn a proper 2hbh. What are you talking about as far as the comment "2HBHs don't generate much topspin compared to 1HBHs." That is totally false. Most 2hbh generate more topspin compared to 1hbh.

Best pro to copy on the 2-hander (IMO) is Chang. It is a very simple stroke and easy to copy. Another 2-hander that is easy to follow is Daveydenko. Nice easy stroke without any idiosynchracies like Agassi, Courier, Connors or Safin.

For me, Sergi Brugera had a 2-hander that I copied and it worked for me.

if you're talking simplicity, how do you like Ginepri's bh?

Well, I'd forget about the big loop on the backhand side. If you want to hit a lot of top, get your butt low and swing so the racquet finishes high - like over your right shoulder. You might not develope as much top on the backhand side as the forehand side but the same principles govern both strokes. However, the big loop will generally get you in a lot of trouble on the backhand - just keep it simple.

start your stroke earlier so you have time. and go from low to high. don't slap at the ball, but more like cetch the ball and release it right back out(kinda like a basketball). just start out slow, and after about 10 min you will start to get the feel of it. my backhand is giving me a lot of trouble, but someone showed me this, and it just helped out a bunch. i need to actually go back and do what i just told you. cuz until tonight i forgot lol... this is what i think atleast
