Bad move by Mahut

lol thats about when i turned it on this morning, and I thought the same thing. kept waiting for him to get broken but somehow he kept holding. i think isner just slumps and walks around slowly like murray. than when the point starts he looks fine.

Exactly! He looks mopey and enervated around the court but can still serve like a demon. He could have gone for 20 more games, IMO.

IMO, if they continued into the darkness... Mahut would have lost in another game or two as his serving was going downhill quickly due to the poor light.

I love that word

They're both gonna be toast in the next round. They should just keep this game going as long as they can to increase their fame.

So many armchair experts.

Only Mahut can know how he was finding it to play out there - and let's not forget the little fact he'd been out there for 7 hours - he was probably dizzy from just changing ends!

He made the best decision he could at the time, and no one that is not him has any right at all to criticise.

For once, I agree with you, Bonehead. move by Mahut. He had Isner on the ropes tonight and probably would have finished him off in a couple of more games. Isner should be much tougher to beat tomorrow after a night's rest and nutrition.
Slight editing to make it clearer :-D

Why did Mahut want to stop? Isner was barely moving at all and was serving 20 mph less than his usual speed, if they would have stayed out on court it was only a matter of time before Isner wilted. Now Isner can recover to a certain extent for tommorow and get his service speed up again, if Mahut ends up losing this match he will regret the decision for the rest of his life.

I say the match till it ended. Mahut said he could no longer see the ball! Isner wanted to continue play. Official called the match till afternoon tomorrow.

Anyone ever played a rough match and been beat afterwards? Yeah, it gets worse the morning after... and sometimes even worse 2 days later. Isner will be lucky to get out of bed tomorrow.

This. Having a good night's sleep doesn't automatically reverse all the damage you have done to your body, but it does bring out all the soreness and stiffness in the morning. Considering Mahut was in better shape, this was a good move on his part.

Add to that the fact that had they finished the match yesterday, there was a good chance the organisers would have made them play today. (meh, someone please tell me if my grammar is correct) And nobody wanted this.

Also, Mahut couldn't see the ball. Isner almost broke him. Even very tired, Isner was still capable of winning this, and Mahut had no chance to break him. So there.

If anything, I think Mahut's clear thinking was pretty impressive, considering what a torture this match was/is.

I don't see either of these guys winning in the next round. At this point, they both have to feel like Wimbledon 2010 is over for them. This match alone has got to feel like a final. The whole world is watching to see who wins.

I can't imagine how sore and stiff they will feel when play starts again. The one in better physical condition will likely win. I'll give the edge to Mahut because Isner looked to be really feeling it.

Whatever happens they will be famous in Tennis history///or...aleady are

Let's think about this will they really be famous? The record certainly will be but will anybody remember who made the record? Unless they make some noise somewhere else maybe they won't be as famous as they should be. The record is bigger than them. They created something bigger than themselves.

Mahut had Isner on the ropes ever since the thirties yet somehow that break didn't materialize then.

I'd say it was a good call by Mahut. Isner, being 15cm taller also should have an easier time keeping the quality of his serve up.

If Mahut couldn't break his serve in broad daylight, how was he gonna break serve in the twilight?

Yup, exactly.

Mahut needed to do what Mahut's body needed to do. Maybe he felt some cramps coming on. And it couldn't hurt to consult with his coach, as whatever Mahut was doing clearly wasn't working.

It isn't all about Isner.

Except, of course, for the fact that the only match points that occurred were in favor of Isner.

Seems like an excellent decision by Mahut--if his fitness is superior, which I suspect is very much the case, his recovery will also be better thus, it seems a better move to bet that you'd be fresher tomorrow than take a chance on who may see better in the coming darkness, essentially nullifying any fitness advantage you think you may have at 59 all. Plus, Isner, despite his condition, had good timing on his serve--he will have to start all over today.

Mahut said he wanted to play, just that he was having trouble seeing the ball. These guys invested hours into that 5th and people want it to continue when someone is having trouble seeing the ball.

And for someone that said they should move them to center court with the lights on. Umm this is not your local usta tournament. People just can't enter center court and pick a seat

Which obviously is a worthless argument, since Mahut can only get breakpoints after breaking Isner, while for Isner a breakpoint is a matchpoint.

Besides, I was refering to BreakPoint's usage of the term.

Glad you have a firm grasp of the obvious. Hardly worthless, since the refutation was to the phrase "had Isner on the ropes." The stats and score simply refute that assessment.

Then try to reread my post and argue the point about "being on the ropes" with Breakpoint

I thought it was quite funny....although if you just bold-lettered the initial words without the editing, we would have still got the drift....
