The Nadal-Djokovic 5th set at RG 2013 had some of the highest quality play I've ever seen on a Claycourt (particularly from Nadal, after he went a break down). I'd have to give it my vote of those.

Other epic 5th sets?

Federer-Safin AO 2005
Federer-Nadal Rome 2006
Nadal-Coria Rome 2005
Djokovic-Wawrinka AO 2013

The 5th set of RG13 by a mile. Nadal played the most awesome tennis after losing his serve in the 1st game. Every single point was on knife edge. Nadal was going for his shots painting the lines like no one else can. It was magic!

Nadal/Djokovic RG semi this year was insane. Nadal looked like he was fighting for his life out there and produced some ridiculous shots.

Off the top of my head, the fifth set of Nadal-Coria Rome 2005 was also spectacular.

Nadal and Djokovic are both amazing when it comes to fifth sets. Nadal I think is 16-5 and Djokovic 19-7. Before the RG semi this year, they were at 15-5 and 18-6 respectively, each had a 75% winning percentage.

According to this thread, the best fifth set ever happened either since 2010 or in 2005. I guess a lot of people here have been watching tennis since either 2005 or 2010 (or even 2012).

This would certainly make sense given the demographic of the board in general. Even older members will struggle to remember many of the older amazing 5th set battles specifically between players who are less famous, more often remembering the iconic battles between the very top dogs.

The Isner-Mahut fifth set was the most epic-it lasted literally forever and you couldn't decide who would win. I mean c'mon not 20-18, not 30-28, not 50-48 but 70-68!!!!! That's just wicked awesome!

Wimbledon 2009 and then Wimbledon 2008 finals above all in tier 1.

Tier 2 includes comebacks from being a break down to win like RG2013SF, AO2012F and USO2011SF.

I didn't see it but the fith set of the 1980 u s open final must have been really amazing to see..borg had come from 2 sets down v McEnroe in that final and it was 4-4 in the 5th set till supermac broke borg..its quite tense watching it now on youtube even though we know now that mac won.

I agree with Wimbledon 2008 too..2 all time greats at their peak (or pretty close to it)..going toe to toe in the 5th set of the final of the major with the most history..also the fading light added to the drama..

In term of drama Wimbledon 2008 was amazing. It was not only the match, it was all the story behind it. The spanish pirates stealing the jewel of his majesty the king of tennis. God I loved the Nadal-Federer rivalry!

Nadal crushing ***** in the fifth set at Roland Garros was my favourite. Not only did ***** lose the match, but he failed to fulfil the dream of his dead coach/surrogate Mother. Now every time he thinks of Roland Garros he'll think of himself as being impotent at Roland Garros- not able to make her dying wish come true.

How classy.
Why am I not surprised at comments like this. Typical real Nadal fans in their true colors.

Connors - Krickstein (1991 USO), capped off an epic match.

The 2008 final is the most dramatic 5th set of the Roger Federer era. The 2012 AO final had avg rally duration of 1 minute. All you need to know about the time wasting abilities of the combatants.

I was stunned by Nadal's performance in the 5th set of SF against Djokovic at RG this year. Truly exceptional.

I disagree. There was nothing exceptional in Nadal's performance, beside couple of lucky shots that should have landed out.
Djokovic was better player in that match and should have won it if Pacal Maria was not biased and officials agreed to water down the extremely dry and dusty court as they should have.

Worst 5th set ever.
Not to mention Pacal Maria's earlier incorrect overrules that gave Nadal some crucial breaks in previous sets.

Wimbledon 1980, Borg Vs McEnroe, 8-6.

Ivanisevic vs. Rafter, 2001 Wimbledon final.

These were two I thought of. Restricting ourselves to the past five years or so (for the sake of TTW's infants), I'd say the Isner/Mahut match, and the '08 & '09 Wimbledon finals.

Going further back again, there's also a couple of Boris Becker's matches I'd mention offhand:
  • Becker vs Lendl in the 1988 Masters final. Won on a net-cord dribbler in the fifth set tie-break (all over YouTube if you'e interested)
  • Sampras vs Becker in the 1996 Masters final. Becker took it the distance by winning the fourth set TB 13-11, and was broken only once in the entire match ~ but at 4-4 in the final set; Pistol Pete really knew how to pick his moments.

I can think of a few women's finals with Steffi Graf as well which were fairly loaded with final-set drama.

MDL

Terrible 5th set, because biased officials and referee won it for Nadal.

Nope. Djokovic got beaten by Nadal and he was certainly not the better player in that match. LOL "lucky shots". Yeah, Djokovic was very unlucky that Nadal managed to hit almost three times as many winners as he did from the ground in the 5th set.

I know it hurts, but Nadal took it to Djokovic in the 5th set. :)

I was all for Djokovic in that match. I was so damn sick of Nadal winning RG, but I had to tip my hat at Nadal's clutch performance.

It doesn't matter who deserves, its the end result that matters. RNadal won his 8th title at RG, deal with it.
Sincd you take everything against NDjokovic personally, this is not to diminish his fighting spirit, but to say RNadal didn't deserve to win is nothing but you doing the same.

Perhaps you could be a little more specific as to which point you're referring to, with a more rigorous argument than 'you are wrong'. Here are the relevant sections of Sid_Vicious' post for you to try to refute;

Djokovic lost to Nadal. That is an irrefutable fact. You can, however, try to refute the bolded point in the quote.

Nadal managed to hit almost three times as many winners as he did from the ground in the 5th set.

I can't find the statistics for winners by set, unfortunately, so unless either of you can provide evidence for this statistic, then this point cannot be argued over.

From the RG website.

Nadal 5th set: 14 FH winners, 5 backhand winners

Djokovic 5th set: 6 FH winners, 2 backhand winners.

I was a bit off. It was not "almost three times" the winners. Still, it was a significant margin.

Sid_Vicious has provided evidence. So that's 19 winners to 8 for Nadal, and has amended his statement to account for the statistics.

Your turn, Chico. Please provide your argument.

My main point was that Nadal did much more than hit a "few lucky shots that landed in" as Chico put it.

I have that match on my computer and watched it recently. The winner count does not even tell the whole story. Nadal's groundstrokes had some serious zip on them midway through the 5th. Some of the biggest shots were not even winners. For example, when Nadal broke Djokovic back in the 5th set, he won the point with an enormous CC backhand that Djokovic could not do much with.

USO 2011's 5th set was just excellent quality, Fed and Djoko were both hitting some incredible winners. Not to mention the insane fightback by Djokovic
