who do you think is the biggest waste of talent.
here are the contenders in my opinion not in any order
1. Nick kyrgios. His serve and game would be great if he even applied himself. He has the touch/feel of a federer but without any application. But its tough to say what his true talent level was, as he didnt really apply himself. Beat nadal in wimbledon at a young age, but nadal wasnt a factor on grass at that point. Beat djokovic handily in some masters tournaments. Pressed an inform federer a few times, even beat federer once, but at slam level was poor.
2. Richard Gasquet - early on, backhand looked genius but gradually fell away. He was a prodigy in the juniors and destined for great things but wasnt to be.
3. Gael Monfils - early on, the weapons and athleticism and sheer power were the awe of many. He wasted himself on show pony and a lot of injuries as well.
4. Marat Safin - guy had probably the biggest weapons in the history of the sport, yet only won 2 grand slams and easily got beaten in the other slam finals. His power level was off the chart, a true power player for only a couple of majors. With that kind of raw power, serve, he could've been great. Injuries cut him short. You dont find players like him nowadays, the closest consistent version of that is probably djokovic of 2011.
5. David Nalbandian - talent level off the chart, especially the touch/feel of the game. Especially evident in the few masters tournaments he won. At grand slam level he was much poorer. His fitness, lack of motivation and injuries cut him short.
6. Andy murray - even though 3 grand slams, in some of the major finals v federer or djokovic, he was easily beat in straight sets, with numerous periods of lacklustre, unmotivated play. Considering his high talent level, he should've done more. He had a better all round transition game than Federer at times, this was evident in the masters wins. Injuries have cut him short.
7. Juan martin del potro - Huge weapons, especially the biggest forehand in the history of the sport. Injuries cut his career short, so wasnt a waste of talent per se. but a sad end.
8. Kei nishikori - had some serious talent especially on the backhand side. dismantled novak in the us open.
9. Grigor dimitrov - had the style of federer yet did not deliver
10. Marcelo rios - good one from yester year, pleasing game for the eye. didnt do much at the slams.
My vote goes to #5- david nalbandian. Easily. guy had the genius quality of a federer but did not show up to grand slams, and was sick or injured at some of the key slam matches. He made Djokovic, Nadal and federer look foolish at one masters series event . atleast safin and murray won majors and cant be considered to be wasted talent because of this.
#3 gael monfils would be a good choice as well. early on he looked like having ridiculous talent and raw power. didnt deliver anything.
