Hey everyone... Varsity tennis tryouts are coming up in a little less than a month and I'm getting pretty nervous. I'm a freshman trying out, and I know of at least 2 others that are very good. I really want to make the varsity team because I've been working so hard and I want to show people that I can do it. Realistically speaking, I think I can compete physically, but the only thing is that I'm really nervous and getting unsure of myself. It's worse because I know that there are two other freshman trying out who are very good themselves. Because of the limited spots on the team, I can't help thinking that only one of us will make it, and I dont really have enough confidence to know that I'm going to make it.

I would appreciate any advice, tips, etc. Please help calm my nerves :|

First of all, stop thinking.
Second, stick to what you know.
Third, who cares about the others, as long as you make the team then everything else will fall into place.

You wouldn't be trying out if you didn't think you could do it.
If you don't think that you can handle the people on varsity, then don't try out.
Just don't complain about what you should have done.

What I would suggest is already told in the links posted by Marius. Keep calm and don't lose your head or let your emotions get to you. Be confident in yourself, even if you mess up sometimes. It may sound hard, but it's needed. I was cut from my school team because I got too emotional and unconfident. By you posting here shows that you are already not sure of yourself, which is not necessarily a good thing.

If you go out there not thinking that you are not good enough from day 1, then you have already lost and probably won't make the team. On the other hand, if you go there knowing what you're going to do and believe in yourself, it's gonna be hard to stop you from doing good. Just calm down and don't think about it too much, just enjoy it and have fun. I know it's hard when you really want something, but it's better to be beaten by a better player than being beaten by yourself.

One thing you defenitely do not want to do is what you are already doing, being unsure of yourself. I couldn't tell you enough about how important being confident is. You should just go out, have fun, and do your best. And don't get discouraged if you don't make the team. Fortunetly making a tennis team isn't everything. Trust me, in September I tried out for my 8th grade team and didn't make it. Of course I came home really sad and I even cried a bit but then in October I played a USTA tournament and won two matches with the same game as what I had when I tried out. So if they don't put you on the team, which I hope they do put you on, just keep playing and getting better and try out next year. Hope this helps and best of luck with the tryouts.
