Bueno vs Hingis: a fairy face off

Two of my four fairies against each other, with their magic sticks charged and their form at their best.

A neutral court when they never won a major even if both lost finals there: the stadium of Roland Garros.Playmaking at its best and at its purest on a surface that will reward it.

on one side of the ring, the artisty, athleticism, timing and grace of the great Maria Esther Bueno.A woman whose courage equals her bad luck, being, along with Connolly , the worst case of injuries a top woman has ever gone through.

She was like a royal princess, altive, yet graceful and elegant.A true class act.

On the other side, the princess of charm, arrogance and the last true great character, men or women in tennis history. The polemichal swiss miss relied upon perfect timing and class ( those drop shots, those volleys) and a superior mind that created the most intringued plots. She was like Evert but far more gifted ( and, of course, more menthally prone to slumps)

Who wins? the latin princess or the spicy princess?

If they played their 100%, with no bad injuries, no bad feelings, just the sheer joy they so much liked to share with the spectators ( that was their real trademark), there is no other match I´d pick to watch.

Oh¡ wait, yes there is ONLY ONE other match...

Bueno. On clay (or grass) she would work harder if her back was against the wall. Plus her superior court craft would pay dividends. Also Bueno was no slouch on clay - look at her record at the Italian. It would be a dream match, I agree, but at 100%, Bueno had more weapons at her disposal. Both supremely talented, but only 1 with the mind, skill and work ethic of a true champion. Just my opinion. Happy New Year :)

Martina had enormous courage and will, look at her record against the sisters, Seles, Sanchez and other big champions.

Very tough call, yes.Happy New Year to you all

I dont know that much about Bueno. Was Hingis the player she was most similar to. King described her as a marvelous all around player but said her biggest weaknesses was that she was a bit slow, and was a bit short in power. She said she was one of the most incredible shotmakers, tacticians, an excellent volleyer, and perhaps the most graceful player since Lenglen.

Bueno was, as her name goes, just too good. She and Court were the first champions I followed and the contrast between them was excellent; a pitty Bueno could not overcome her many health problems because her rivalry with Court, which could have lasted well into 1970-1972 if Maria had stayed in good shape would have been just as great as the Laver-Rosewall rivalry that went in paralel. That makes me question if Margaret would win the 1970 GS in case Bueno had stayed competitive...
