Cañas, a real threat to Nadal and Federer at the FO?*SPOILER*

What do you think? I always enjoyed watching Cañas and I´m impressed with his successful comeback. It´s true he didn´t beat any top players yet but his comeback is being impressive so far. Rome and Montecarlo will be a real test for him but he will probably need to play qualies there.
I remember his QF match against Puerta at the 2005 FO, it was a 5 sets match that could go either way and later Puerta reached the final and had set point to force Nadal to a 5th set.
The main problem for Cañas is his ranking is still too low so his draw at the FO is too uncertain but if he meets the seeded hardcourters in the earlier rounds he has a good chance to progress and reach at least the QF. But do you think he is going to be a threat to Nadal and Federer at the FO, maybe not to get the title but to beat them?

He ran over Ferrero last Sunday, and he´s now ranked 67th. Won 8 challengers and an ATP tournament without loosing a set.

I think this guy is really serious... specially after being proved he was not guilty, he is totally on fire.

I´m happy for him.

I think it's too early to say whether he's a threat or not. I love JCF, but he is no Federer or Nadal.

Cañas plays like Nalbandian: he's a retriever. He is a fighter and always gives 110% but that's not enough to beat Federer or Nadal.

He's mainly a retriever... but a retriever with a biiig forehand, and a huge ON THE RUN game. And he takes the backhand on the rise ALL THE TIME, so Nadal's spin wouldn't bother so much.

Nadal won his previous meeting, but I have faith in Willy.
Winning the FO? Nah, don't see it happening though. A QF could be nice.

agreed. he said that he´s actually aiming for the top 20 at the end of the year. i think it´s too early to say, but by the way he played his 2 DC matches on hard court and what have shown on clay the last months, he is well capable to become a real threat for the top guys (excluding Fed, naturally).

Cañas used to be my favorite player before he got suspended. But don't get me wrong, he is still one of my favorites, I just didn't get to see him play for a couple of years and I hope he can continue to climb the rankings.

I answered yes to the poll question, but realistically I doubt he could compete against the top 2 at the French. But I'd love to see him make the semis in his first time back.

I asked this a few weeks ago. It´s not that Cañas is going to win the FO after this but do you think now that he is a real threat to Nadal and Fed at the FO? He is supposed to play better on clay than on hardcourts...
