Challengers and Rankings

Maybe I have just thought of this, or maybe I'm reading this wrong.

ATP Ranks roll on a "Best 18 tournaments" Ranking system.

So technically a player can be Top 50 just by winning 18 challengers.

There is plenty of Challengers that offer 80-100 points, for the winner...

Idk maybe I'm reading something wrong???

Possible but improbable. A couple of players are in the top 80 or so almost exclusively from Challenger points...Golubev, Carreno Busta, Klahn, Nedovyesov come to mind.

He'd be ranked 20 in the world if he won 18 challengers at 100 points. A guy with that kind of consistency would not play a full challenger schedule though.

Challengers go a great way to supplement points when people look to break into the main draws. Don't know if it's realistic to expect 18 wins though.

So if a player has enough points to participate in those events, he wont be able to count all those 18 challengers event towards his ranking. Basically there comes a time when a player has to win matches on the main tour or they can't raise in the rankings.

Also, players in the top 50 are forbidden from entering challengers, except with a wildcard. I guess the challenger GOAT Yen Hsun Lu, who is ranked 45 right now, is kicking himself for letting his ranking get too high during the normally unproductive clay season.

Does anyone really kick themselves for letting their ATP ranking get too high? There's no crying in baseball, and it is professional tennis after all.
