When I was collecting, I just used the new rackets I purchased. Since I don’t volley much, my rackets look pretty much new even after somewhat heavy usage.

I think, though, untouched new rackets maintain their value, whereas the used ones will go down in value.

I don't use them to be honest, but we're just talking about old wooden frames that are mint, I don't collect newer rackets.

If you buy a new racket, do you use it, or just keep it in the closet?

Are you talking about *new* (current model) frames? - The answer is USE IT right away. I don't buy spare units.

OR

Are you talking about *new to you* frames ? (mint/clean/good condition used and rarely NOS old frames) - The answer is WAIT TO USE IT since they have to wait in the closet till its time to restring and give it a proper shot. Spare units even if NOS might get stored in the closet

I used to just buy 2, one to use and one to keep new and unused.

Quit doing that, seemed excessive, expensive, and a tad ridiculous.
So most of my collection is now used, singles with a few exceptions.
Majority of my tennis is clay and I am careful in transporting, so they stay looking pretty new anyway.

I rationalize my addiction by playing with each frame I get no matter how old and trying to quantify/qualify the things I like and/or dislike about each one. In fairness that process led me to ordering my Angell Custom that was just a Frankenstein of my favorite rackets and is by far my go-to stick for competition.

Granted I’m not collecting match-used or anything like that, instead I’ve been working on a Yamaha Collection for a few years alongside numerous other rackets of all eras and have been sure to have spent at least one full session using each of the 57 and counting I’ve racked up.

I have a specific model that i use and will likely not get replaced as my main.

Then i have sticks that i might want to bring out every now and then just to play around and appreciate. Most of these sticks have great feel that i also have no business using

Depends. New-er racquets will get played with but not used excessively as my 'match' racquet (Ezone DR98). Older, rarer sticks i may use for a few games only even when just knocking up with friends for fear of damaging them or them slipping out of my hand. Every single one of my 85 racquets gets played with, it's the length of that playing time though that is determined by the racquet itself. Most fun are my wooden ones, a Jack Kramer Pro Staff, Maxply McEnroe and a Donnay Borg Pro.
