Correct Breathing

Since I don't have that much time to train my stamina I've witnessed a drop in my level of tennis. I start breathing to heavily after long points and make stupid mistakes - well more than usual at least.

After playing with friends yesterday, we talked about how we breath while hitting. Most of us (3/4) including myself were mostly inhaling during preperation, holding breath while starting the swing and exhaling upon contact.
The last guy though was starting his exhale during his preparation around the time when the ball landed - so I tried it out and it worked very well ... my heartrate went down and I was more relaxed while hitting - after googling the topic, I found some articles that were promoting this kind of breathing too.

How do you breath ? Is exhaling before contact the "right" way and if so why do many pros seem to exhale upon contact (judging by the way they're grunting)

Great topic. Smooth exhale at contact is right for me. I notice sometimes after an intense point that I had been holding my breath, usually lose those points!

I guess that's why you hear some of the pro's grunts sound like "wha-uh".?. The "wha-" is the start of the exhalation and the "uh" is a bigger exhale around contact?

I like to cycle breath as much as possible during hitting. Not too sure if it is "proper" but I exhale during contact and inhale while moving / prep. Just a crossover from other sports I've done and it seems to stick pretty well.
