Cross tie-off on Babolat Pure Drive Team (2015)

Hi guys.

I've just installed new grommets on a Babolat Pure Drive Team (2015).

I bought the grommets from a UK supplier.

Klipper site says top tie off at 6.

But the largest hole is at 8.

Do I just use common sense and use the obvious hole?

Is it common for Klipper to be wrong?

Your help, as always, would be appreciated.

Cheers, Paul

1) All PD 2015 have indicated on the frame where to tie-off the crosses, and I believe its 6H
2) I hope you have fitted the grommet strip so that it matches the original strip
3) The tie-off location, as I've said, is marked. It will also be on the right side of the frame, when looking form the handle and the buttcap is in the correct orientation. The wording 'Babolat' on the inside of the top of the frame will also be up right

(y) Tie off is marked and should be 6 at the top. Whenever I replace grommet sets, due to the issue of asymmetric grommets, I always remove the old set and lay them down on a table. You can see whether the old set is asymmetric. Then I duplicate that setup with the new grommet set and make sure that it goes into the frame the same way. Babolat did revise their grommet systems so that some frames that were asymmetric when new, are now symmetric. If you see this, then you can install the symmetric set any way you want. But this is why I lay out the old grommets. Prince and Dunlop also had frames like this. They are a PITA, but you need to do this.

Hi Esgee.

This set seems symmetrical.

I've installed it correctly, I think.

It's just that the 8 hole his bigger than the 6 and seemed and easier tie off.

How would I know if I've installed it incorrectly.

There are no gaps for example, the grommets fit snuggly, 360.

Any help appreciated

Hi Skippy.

I think I've installed it correctly. And there is a tie off grommet at 6. But there's a wider grommet whole at 8.

Do you think it will cause a problem?

8 will probably work. I use 8 on the 2018 Pure Aero.

The grommet strip for the PD 2015 is asymmetric, and the pieces will only fit together 1 way

Picture? It is easy to install some Babolat grommets upside down.

Here we go Irvin. I've tied at 8 Throat for mains.

6 throat

And then 8 head as the grommet was bigger.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Also. The strips I had for the Pure Drive Team, it seemed that the longest strip was mean for the bottom corner. ie I didn't start with a small grommet strip at 4 and up.

What's the worry? There are stringers all over the planet enlarging holes that weren't meant for tie offs just so they can tie off there. Knot location is not going to affect the frames integrity. Me personally, I don't like the way the tie off location at the head of the new Pure Drive (at 6H) kind of forces me to tie a left hand knot. I prefer to tie a right hand knot so I go to 8H. Not going to affect anything.

Cheers, 10. Have I tied off on the correct side also?

Awesome. I'm worrying too much I think

Can I ask you one more question.

Is string always supposed to cover the gap/join where the grommets meet? Or is that not always the case?

Sorry for taking up som much of your time

Not always the case especially on the newer grommets.

Actually, this is something of a can of worms you are opening. For instance, many moons ago, Wilson took a hard line stance and announced that unless you secured both ends of their bumperguards with a string loop, they would consider the racquet warranty void. As you can imagine, this caused quite a stir. It forced us stringers to skip a cross and double back. With natural gut especially, this was not something anybody enjoyed.

A number of the recent Babolat racquets have asymmetric bumper kits. If you start on the correct side with your crosses, the string loops will secure all the grommet junctures.

^^i remember that, at first it was just on Hammer racket then it spread to all Wilson rackets with bumperguards. You will still see factory strung rackets (and some pro shops) where the ends of the bumpers are looped like this.

Yeah, I do it now and again. Not really sure of what my criteria is. Just strung a brand new Burn 100 Team with Alu Rough. Did NOT do it.

Whenever I replace a bumper grommet set, I typically double back the cross string so the string keeps both ends of grommet in place, at least for the first stringing .

I would be careful with this. Just like how sometimes strings are installed or tied off incorrectly, the grommets could have been previously installed incorrectly.

2015 Pure Drive grommet sets have a small arrow on one side of the bumper guard. The arrow should be on the left if you lay down the racquet so the buttcap is right side up (i.e.: big stripe on the logo is on the bottom)
