This issue of Tennis mag quotes an expert as saying dampeners cannot damp the large vibrations of the racquet but just reduce the sound (the irritating ping).
It is probably true, but the reason given was that they increase the mass of the racquet slightly and hence change the frequency of vibration.
Isn't it more correct to say that they reduce the vibration of the strings by clamping them and this reduces the sound?
Otherwise adding lead should also change the sound. And I am not sure the weight of a light dampener (2 g) is comparable to the weight of the strings (15 g), if weight was supposed to be the reason.
