Being a Pakistani I am just overjoyed that we are in the world group for the first time ever. Our secret weapon so far has been spicy bbq and curries which visiting players have found hard to digest :) We beat Taiwan at home and their players had upset stomachs

Anyway.. congrats to Mahboob Khan and other Pakistanis. we play Chile at home in september, so Chileans, any idea who's going to be in the team?

I'm not chilean...but I'm guessing Gonzalez and Massu could be playing both the singles and doubles rubbers, although Massu's been out due to injury.

I'm a Paki too and that's great. Although I don't like our chances against Chile. Thailand only had Paradorn whereas Chile has Massu and Gonzalez. Hopefully Pakistan will win.

I am chilean and reading the newspapers in Chile they are very excited about you guys going over there. Lots of talk about your main star. Aisamul-Hag Qureshi, Just won the Islamic Solidary Games (2 gold medals singles & dobles ) Congrats for that!!
Was he the player who team with a jewish player in the usopen?
Yes, will be Massu-Gonzalez for us, maybe Adrian Garcia or Gamonal.
Massu had injuries, not 100% yet. He play today (Henman)
Congratulations to Pakistan.!!!!!

I'm neither Chilean or Pakistani, but a tennis lover in general, & I am very happy to see a nation like Pakistan attempt to qualify for the Davis Cup's World Group. I know Chile is more well-known on the world scale, but the average tennis player doesn't know much about professional tennis in Pakistan, w/the exception of Mr. Khan's posts on this msg board.

thanks, andre'smom and tennisnj. Yeah Aisam is the same guy. he teamed up to play with Amir Haddad for wimbledon and the US Open. Too much fuss about nothing!

andr'esmom, you guys are probably going to go for clay right? aisam has a good serve and volley game, so it should be an interesting game. The #2 is aqeel khan is a base liner I think... I just hope the games are close

tennisnj, you are very right. Other than Aisam, no Pakistani player has made it through to big tournaments like the grand slams. Tennis is very much an elite sport in Pakistan and there is very little effort at present to spread the base of tennis players. Hopefully this small success should help with the games development

singlehanded, good to run into another Pakistani... where you at?

I am pretty sure we will go with clay ....
I disagree with you the big fuss about nothing.
This couple players show to the world that good will and love for the sport prevail against, different believes and politics. He always is going to be remeber for that.
I have great admiration for both of this guys..!! I hope to see them play again.

Um, leftypro, this year the UNITED STATES is playing to get INTO the World Group as well. If for one year, the USA & Pakistan are in the same boat. A loss by either of them & it's back to zonal relegation. No I don't like their chances vs. Chile BUT, there are many who don't like the USA's chances @ Belgium on clay.

Oh you misunderstood me. I meant that tennis is meant to bring bring people together... people like Aisam and Haddad... people like us. Hence I dont understand the big fuss made at home about Aisam playing with a Jewish player....

I dont fancy our chances either... but Im just happy that we made it to the playoffs

Andy and the Bryans get bounced by psychotic Malisse and the Rochus boys on clay in Belgium?? Highly unlikely, but it could happen and with US out of the World Group even fewer people will care about Davis Cup.

Lefty, you're right about the public's reaction (@ least in the US) if we lose this tie to Belgium. At the club I teach & play @, no one mentions Davis Cup, even in passing. But remember, the US was supposed to win on a hard court @ home vs. Croatia. What the USTA failed to tell the public (& the players lol) was that it was on a slow hard court. Maybe the Belgians will lay down a very fast clay surface or screw up as much as possible w/the surfacing that we'll have an even greater chance to win. Probable? Nah, only if the USTA is involved. But that's for another post.
