Hi everyone, I know this has been debated before but there still hasn't been a conclusive answer. What is Delpo actually using?

No one is actually sure if it's a PSC 6.1 or not. In fact, someone who strung for DelPo said that Juan Martin wasn't even sure what was under the PJ. It looks like a PSC 6.1, though, that's for sure.

If Delpo doesn't even know then what hope do we have of figuring it out?
Maybe @Wilson Official could join in this poll, they might be able to shed some light here.

I doubt Wilson we be weighing in on what's under a paint job! Haha. I think it's a 6.1, but maybe it's a custom layup or something. My understanding is that DelPo liked his old PSCs because they were nice and broken in, but the new PSC pro stocks they were providing him didn't have the same feel. So maybe Wilson did some tinkering.

Here you go.

From this thread:
http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/inde...le-change-spanish.474784/page-7#post-10415225

I asked Juan Martin about his rackets a couple of days ago and they are the same as the ones he was using previously, however do not feel the same.

He would have continued using his old rackets but considering his break from tennis following his multiple wrist surgeries, he decided that it was time to get new rackets made.

Given his surgeries, and the resulting requirement to prolong his career, he switched to natural gut crosses. This could be the main reason that his new rackets do not feel like his old ones. Plus his old rackets had been used for many years, had been restrung hundreds of times and had hit tens of thousands of balls.

Juan Martin does not know what racket is under his paint scheme. The overwhelming majority of players do not know what racket is under their paint scheme. However they know if they like it or not; how the racket plays and feels is extremely important to the players, and they will test different rackets occasionally to see if there is anything better available to them.

Only the manufacturer knows the composition and exact specifications of the rackets they provide to the players. Although there are a few players with completely custom molds and string patterns (i.e. Alexandr Dolgopolov), I believe that the manufacturer will try to get most players to use of their “standard” molds and drill patterns. It costs a lot of time and money to create new custom molds and drill patterns, and it is much easier for them to use one of their current molds and tweak the composition or materials during the layup process to suit the player.

Back to Juan Martin’s rackets though.

I do not believe that he is using a custom mold. I believe he is using the same mold as the 6.1 line with a 95 square inch headsize and an 18 x 20 drill pattern.

Below are some comparison pictures between Juan Martin’s racket and two rackets from other Wilson sponsored players, Kyle Edmund (left) and Dusan Lajovic (right):

It is highly likely that there are differences in the composition and specifications of these rackets, however having held and studied them in detail, they all share the same mold, headsize and string pattern.

I hope this can help to clarify the situation with Juan Martin’s rackets.

Here's my take on his racket. Judging from the picture above, it looks like his current one could be a custom made 95. Beam looks flat to almost a boxy beam. It comes together at a sharper point than the usual 6.1s which are more rounded off.

I still think when he used the KFactor PJ, it was a Hyper Pro Staff 6.1 and not the Classic. One reason is, his Kfactor didnt have the words Classic paint on the inner throat. Secondly, theres significant difference right above the handle mold, the Classic tapers down, whereas the HPS does not. Del Po's does not taper.

Just my take

It's worth asking, although I doubt they'll reply. I think there should be more transparency in the world of tennis racquets. Wilson could make loads of money from releasing the racquets that players like Delpo actually use. They could still give the racquets fresh paintjobs, but keep the frame the same. They could even start making racquets on request for an extra charge.

That's an interesting take, his frame does look boxy in those pictures.

All 6.1 Molds are the same, It's the way Delpo grips his racquet and the paint job as well. Even the TW review of the Hyper specifically states it is the same classic 6.1 mold.

Whatever his layup is or was It doesn't really matter. The reason he got new frames is so they would feel at least SLIGHTLY similar to his 8+ year old Kfactor PJ's of which he ran out of. So at this point he is using the same mold and a custom layup for similarity and continuity purposes. If you want to get close to the Delpo frame then I guess get a Euro HyperProStaff 18x20 and slap some lead on that, and string it up about 100 times with tight tension and give it a matte black paint job. Don't forget the high leather grip as well as power pads and the 4 leaf clover dampener. No real confirmation on his weight and balance but I have heard it is like 360 or 370 strung. The reason I specify Hyper is because it is exactly the same as the classic, just crisper, more comfortable and lighter because of the HyperCarbon in the layup. ALSO Del Potro used the actual racquet during his junior career so I see no reason to change anything but add lead tape. Why would he go back one model to the classic when he was already familiar with the Hyper:

It looks like the Hyper in the pictures but could easily be a paintjob as it shares the same mold as the classic.

It's a 6.1 Hyper Carbon. It was what he was using at 14 when I trained with him and the other Argentinian players with him. Wilson actually got mad at him while he was injured because he refused to change from the 6.1 frame so he had them painted black and was seen practicing in Argentina with no stencil for a time. Unless someone knows something I know the majority of Argentine players before and up until Delpo all used the Hyper Carbon.

Wow! That's really cool, how come you got to practice with Delpo?

I've found a brand new 18x20 hyper 6.1 for 200 euros, or I can get the 25 anniversary 6.1 for about £130. Do you think that the hyper would be closest to the frame Delpo is using?

My father was a tour player from Argentina and established an academy in FL where all the argentines came to train with the national coaches during the Eddie Herr and OB. You name the player he's been at my house or I trained with at some point except for Coria and Nalbandian.
That's really cool! Did you get to talk much to any of the players?

I'd add a leather grip, and add the same length of tape to the hoop as Delpo. I am right in thinking his current string set up is ALU @57lbs and gut @57lbs?
I did the same to mine and it was quite close to what I would expect delpo to have his at, excepto mine was 16x18. And yes that is his setup

Stock strung hyper is 340-350, with leather and lead that should be 360-365, OG and dampener you get to 370.

why do these treads never talk about length?

I think he uses 27.5'' but there seems to be some disagreement on this matter. (27.5'' is the stock length of the hyper carbon 6.1 95 Stretch)

From the @ProStringing pictures, the lengths look the absolute same. Also from seeing him up close, the racquet grip is long because it is wrapped high.

That's a good question. I don't recall him using a stretch racquet as a kid. I do have 2 that are 27.5. Still use them from time to time and love them.

the swing weight of his frame, unstrung, was 317.

weight was 355. Not sure about the balance, as I really didn't bother checking it. I will say that it swung really light (even with strings), and was very well balanced. I was extremely surprised how easily it cut through the air.

I didn't check if it was extended or standard. However, when swinging it, I think I would have noticed if it was extended so I'm fairly certain it was standard.
