whenever i see fed play, announcers talk about him hitting a squash shot when in trouble. but for the life of me, it just looks like a fh slice albeit without much bite and skip into the court, that is floatier. but still, the stroke looks basically the same. anyone care to enlighten me on the difference?

Yes, it is a variation of the forehand slice, but a normal slice might be a long fluid stroke, the "squash shot" is more of a "chop" where you hack down through the ball (often somewhat wristy) with a very slightly open racket face and float the ball back deep in order to give yourself time to get back in place.

A more normal forehand slice- just like a backhand slice- will be a harder ball that clears the net by only a foot or so and is used for other reasons than the squash shot.

Other kinds of slice include the drop shot and the "chip".

A squash shot is basically a forehand slice from a defensive position.
