Djokovic's serve looks like Edberg's

They both do that same weird thing with their head, and they both have spinny serves that can go horribly wrong if there's wind.

edit:

but their serves are usually good

You kidding? Djokovic's serve is a thing of beauty, one of the great shots of tennis. Edberg is a noob who foot faults every time.

Nah I dont think so. Edberg has so much sick torque and shoulder rotation which makes it look like ballet. Edberg was also the king of foot faulting (sorry I had to bring foot faults up), whereas Djokovic doesnt foot fauly. Sampras serves more similarly to Djokovic other than the Chong thing Sampras does at the beginning of his stance

I don't think Sampras's serve looks anything like Novak's either. Nothing like it.

Yes, Edberg's serve was much better than he seems to get credit for. I guess its because more than 80% of the posters here never watched Edberg play, yet make comments as if they did. I would never comment on how a Ferrari drives because I never drove one, yet so many people talk smack about something they know nothing about.

Edberg had one of the greatest kick serves ever. His serve wasn't the biggest, but it is highly underrated on these boards. Anyway, the biggest isn't necessarily the greatest, and Edberg's serve was perfectly suited to his overall game. He foot faulted often because he would rush the net 99 % of the time.

LOL can't see I've ever read a statement describing Edberg as a noob. Pure serve and volleyer, and the linkage between the two was something to be admired. In my opinion his first volley was the best in the business (crisp, sharply angled, often times an outright winner). Loved watching the guy - superb player, class act top to bottom.

all serve styles have something in common, but the Sampras/Djoker serve is far apart in almost every way. unlike most posters here, you get it.

if you start looking at it for every aspect, start by the grip, it's already different....

yep.

The intial stance (the angle)= different.

The toss and placement= different

The should angle when toss is at the top= different

The shoulder rotation= different (mostly because of stance and service toss)

The contact point= different

The finish into the court= different

I have seen hundreds of Pete matches and have quite a few on DVD. I have never once thought anyone had a Pete like serve. His is very unique. I laugh at people that claimed Fed's was the same and he copied Pete's motion..LOL, what a joke.

i agree fleabitten...

Thanks for backing me up. From certain angles you notice the pancake more - like from the back angle. Otherwise, its a pretty nice motion (i checked that sampras comparison video and it is pretty close but more "noodly".)
