Eastern or SW Grip

Hi guys,

I've been using an Eastern grip for a while, and i find it gives effective power, but little spin. The semi-western had more spin, but lacked the power that the eastern had. My question is, is moderate-heavy topspin really necessary for today's modern game?

I know Pete Sampras used an Eastern, was he able to pull off spin at all?

Thanks.

Supposedly it is possible to generate the same amount of spin with an Eastern grip and a Western grip, but it is easier for the Western becuase of its swingpath and such. As for your question, most players use a Semi-Western grip in today's game. I personally like the Eastern grip because I like having to generate my own spin. It's really player preference on what grip to use. Some players can't keep the ball in without using a Western grip, while others feel they put to much spin onto the ball witout using less extreme grip.

ofcourse top spin is very necessary in modern tennis especially in extreme crosscourt shots but you could make that with your present grip just it will need a little polishing otherwise try the sw it's more suitable

you can try extreme eastern, it produces decent spin and you can get some pop. When there are two extremes, try the middle.

The answer to your question is: yes! Myself I use an Eastern grip and a SW for high looping forehands (that I choose not to take early). But then again, I don't play many people under 35 years old. If I did, I might move to SW fulltime...

IMHO, for the same swing path and swing speed, SW grip generates more topspin than Eastern. It is because there is more of the hand under the racket to provide resistance as the ball pushes down on the racket in reaction to your brushing-up motion.
