‘I have heard this sh*t too often now’ – Roger Federer ‘sick and tired’ of scheduling claims
George Bellshaw
Friday 30 Aug 2019 7:59 pm

The Swiss thrashed the British No. 2 6-2 6-2 6-1 in just an hour and 20 minutes, with Evans understandably annoyed at being scheduled first on the Arthur Ashe Stadium having had a long battle with French 25th seed Lucas Pouille less than 24 hours earlier. Federer had been able to complete his match under the roof on Wednesday and could put his feet up while Evans did battle with Pouille and admitted he had a ‘competitive advantage’. However, while he didn’t deny his team could have made a request on his behalf, he hit back at suggestions he had demanded to be scheduled at midday on Friday, letting his halo slip to let out an audible obscenity.

‘Not really. I don’t remember that I asked for something,’ he said. ‘Yeah, yeah. It’s maybe nice to be out of the sun, as well, I don’t know, I thought. But I definitely didn’t do it intentionally. I don’t even know if the team asked for day. I know there was questions to have a preference.

‘But that doesn’t mean like, “Roger asks, Roger gets.” Just remember that, because I have heard this **** too often now. I’m sick and tired of it, that apparently I call the shots. The tournament and the TV stations do. ‘We can give our opinion. That’s what we do. But I’m still going to walk out even if they schedule me at 4:00 in the morning.’

Evans had earlier given a wry smile when asked if he could have any input in the scheduling, saying: ‘You think a guy who’s my ranking has any say in that? ‘There is probably about four people in this tournament who has a say when they play. Maybe three. Yeah. ‘Well, if that is the case [that Federer requested the early match], then – well, yeah. It’s tough on me, isn’t it? But that wouldn’t be the first time the higher-ranked player has had pull, so to speak. ‘But also, these guys, the tournament obviously want Roger, would rather Roger be going through that match than me, so it’s understandable, yeah.’

Federer added on the fairness of the scheduling as a whole: ‘I mean, look, yes, regardless of when he finished it was always going to be a competitive advantage for me. So there you have it. Now, is it a big difference if we play at 12:00 or 2:00? Not really. But I think at some stage every hour might matter. ‘I have been there. I know what you’re talking about. Yeah, you could definitely argue that the scheduling was not in his favor. But it’s anyway not fair for me to play my match under the roof, get it done, sit back, relax the next day while he’s battling out a four-hour or a three-hour match, whatever it is, against Pouille. The problem already starts there. ‘That’s tennis. It’s entertainment, and the show must go on. I’ve lost maybe matches this way. I’ve won some this time. Luck was on my side. There you have it. So, yeah, I understand if Danny is, like, a little bit frustrated.’

unreal, Evans commands Djokovic to skip slams, but won't even DARE to blaspheme Holiness Rawdger.

He plays at night, you fools complain. He plays at day, you fools complain.

i do think there is an argument to be made, but this unfortunately goes for how the world works in general, is that the tournaments will hands down cater to the preferences of the top players and also tv ratings. however it is silly to think that fed controls everything. even if he did make a request, its the tournament who gets to decide.

also who knows, maybe they also wanted the UK audiences to see it at a time when it wasn't too late for them. I've heard that they think about that too especially when they used to schedule murray during some of his US matches. people act like fed drives teh schedule when he is 1 player who may or may not make a request or get asked his preference but your issue should be with teh system not the player especially when all the top players make requests.

i honestly do not have time for people who make such a big deal about scheduling, court assignments etc if you are not going to to do more than just complain that a player you dont like gets special treatment and then not direct it towards the system

Didn't you say that you avoid watching Federer matches and normally sleep during that time?
I don't generally watch Fedr. I certainly wouldn't burn the midnight candle to watch his matches and as it was a day match I made dinner during the match today.

I think someone is concerned that Nadal's chances are looking less after that Federer performance...
The first reason why Nadal has no chances is because of his own mental problems. The truth is that in the matches he played against Federer in the last few years there were only 2 where Federer looked truly unbeatable-IW and Shanghai 2017. He was VERY much beatable in AO 2017, Wimbledon 2019 and don't even get me started about Miami 2017. But Nadal just doesn't believe he can beat him anymore, so he misses easy shots on every big point. Even in RG semifinal Nadal didn't look like the better player, except for the third set.

The joke is that Nadal now actually plays with more confidence against Djokovic (though still extremely low) than he does against Federer.

I'm sure Nadal is NOT bothered about Federer. They cannot meet before the final - and Nadal fully expects Novak to take out Fed.
Nadal is probably mentally preparing for Novak.

OK, I would probably think that, yet....

this post below from you would be in the middle of the night, taken from the Federer v Nagal 1st round.

Fedr made 19 UEs.

But, it's OK to watch Federer , just as a tennis fan. (y)

I know Fedal fans want Djokovic out of the way here pretty quick, since in a Fedal final, both sides will fancy their chances for one reason or another.

I assumed it was a day match to accommodate British TV.

i mentioned that earlier and ofcourse the tournament will look after fed, as they do with each other the big 3. it might not be right ofcourse but they look aftr what brings in ratings/money. i stress that picking on one player is never the right way to go about trying to fix issues although i really doubt OP cares about that since she had nothign to say with the preference to Nadal at teh french

Good god that this boring match wans't schedule in night time prime time. people would have demanded their money back

The OP's original point stands. There was absolutely no good reason why Evans was first up on Ashe today.

Disappointing order of play.

High profile players are regularly consulted about whether they have a preference for match time, particularly when they play each other.

We have seen plenty of examples of both players working together to get a match shifted to a different time with agreement from both parties.

We don't know the extent of things, but so early on in the tournament it is very unlikely that the USO schedulers extended the olive branch to Evans here.

The match quality and the experience for the fans suffered as a result.

It's to do with who will get the most viewers at prime time and that's Rafa.

I like fed, but he shouldnt be aruging this. The tournament showed no respect for Evans. Just pushed him through to keep the circus going.

Push the match to 730 so he has 24 hours rest after winning in a 5 set tb.

Pro tennis is a disgrace now a days.

Well, if they had swapped with Djokovic then you'd have complaints about Djokovic playing the day match with less time to recover from the shoulder. Evans was going to be at a disadvantage regardless.

Djok didnt have nearly as tough of a match as evans, he also played at night previously (big difference)

His mri said there is no injury, guy has 1004 now according to roddick.

i think a larger discussion can be had at hte way things are scheduled but that wasn't OP's intention plus honestly so much is given to scheduling/court assignments when its obvious why. there are bigger issues in the sport

Lol, I'm just saying there would be complaints. It sucks that the guys had to play 2 days in a row. I get that.

I see scrubs like opeleka getting a stadium court because he is american. The scheduling bias for them and popular players makes me think dana white is running the show.

Maybe, Evans would've played better a little later in the day, but Fed destroyed him 2, 2 and 1. I don't think there's much to his complaint.
