the best is the Carson facility ,but they hardly get used for Jr. tournaments. maybe 4-6 times a year ,not nearly enough for maximizing use...

Carson is an ugly place. Although the court surface is decent there is tons of traffic heading that way and it just isn't remotely close to anything nice where you can do other things. I heard that Claremont McKenna put milions of dollars into building nice courts and they are just absolutely beautiful. I am personally tired of tournaments in the Long Beach/Northern OC area most of the courts are just absolutely filthy and very fast and worn down. The driving is just ugly and it can seriously make a person lose his or her love for the game by having to play on such poorly maintained courts having to drive hours in traffic to get to them.

yeah well the Claremont Club is a great place to play tournaments.. but in So.Cal.,real estate is not cheap.. investors rather see a condo or a building on a piece of land they own,rather than tennis courts.. we shouldn't complain too much,it's worse in NY... indoor for the winter months,court rental is super expensive and that doesn't include parking fees..

It's not that socal needs to build more courts the bottom line is that there are numerous counrty clubs and college courts as well as other already existing sites that are away from the Long Beach area that can be utilized for tournament events and to go along with the high performace thread, a myriad of places where the USTA can expand their reach and develop more of the elite.

L.A. city has tons of tennis courts that were un-used so they tore them up and built indoor basketball gyms and soccer fields .. that's where the populist are heading.. the paid for play tennis courts rarely earn their keep.. with maintenance cost and lights,I'm pretty sure they're losing money.. people's interest are not on tennis,a kid rather shoot hoops than hit tennis balls... you go to any SoCal tennis area,and the majority of the people playing tennis are Asians.. why is that? golf too..

i don't remember much when i was a junior, but usually the college courts are pretty nice.. whittier narrows is pretty decent and so is santa anita

i think that's just how jr. tennis is though in socal, lots of driving around and waiting, whether it be in traffic or at the tourney lol

Sign of the times how many courts are falling into disrepair in So Cal; between the state's budget woes and over-emphasis of other sports, tennis is the forgotten sport. I've lost count of the # of places I won't play because the courts are so slick they're dangerous. In Palos Verdes at the HS, the baseball field looks like it could be a minor league pro field; they have field turf on the football field; the tennis courts haven't been cleaned in so long they are brown (they were green with red on the outside) - and the fences have holes in them.

I haven't been to the South El Monte facility in a while. Played a tournament there once - they painted the courts purple when the ATP did - very well maintained and a lot of parking.
