Federer played 24 GS finals, Sampras 18.

Federer has a solid lead in both categories, so there really is no question.

Federer didn't lose a final to someone not named Nadal until 2009, and hasn't lost one to someone not named Nadal since.

In very very many ways, Nadal is in essence a random anomaly to Federer's career, a singular issue.
