Roger Federer gives verdict on political landscape after return alongside Nadal & Djokovic

It’s been a busy week behind the scenes in the murky world of tennis politics, with plenty of high-profile movers and shakers operating in the shadows. The ‘Big Three’ – consisting of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic – shared their first ATP player council meeting together, multiple Grand Slam champions Victoria Azarenka and Venus Williams were voted off the WTA council, and British No. 1 Johanna Konta was one of a number of WTA council members who were approached by male counterpart Vasek Pospisil regarding a joint bid to lobby the Grand Slams for more money. That’s not to mention outgoing ATP president Chris Kermode giving a lengthy – and well received – speech to the wider player body at the mandatory meeting before Pospisil brought lawyers to address the group as his efforts to form a union to defend players’ interests gathers momentum, with around 100 stars putting their signature to a petition that is aimed at boosting prize funds. Federer – who returned to the 10-man council this month following a mass exodus at Wimbledon – has certainly been thrust into the deep end, although he welcomed the additional information at his disposal.
