Comparing Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic's losses in Grand Slam semifinals and finals. Looking at the average length of the match, which I think can be interpreted as how hard they made their opponent earn the win.

Federer - 16 Losses - 7 in 5 sets, 5 in 4 sets, 4 in 3 sets
Average match length: 4.19 sets

Nadal - 8 Losses - 3 in 5 sets, 4 in 4 sets, and 1 in 3 sets
Average match length: 4.25 sets

Djokovic - 15 losses - 2 in 5 sets, 6 in 4 sets, 7 in 3 sets
Average match length: 3.67 sets

Notes: For being the greatest grand slam champion of all time, Federer also has a lot of 5 set losses in the biggest matches of grand slams.

Federer has straight setted Novak twice in these matches, Novak has straight setted Federer three times in these matches.

Nadal has only been straight setted once in these matches is remarkable.

Very nice thread .
I always wonders how collects all the valuable information and presents in in very good manner , so Members can easily have some
conclusion .
This method is very effective to analyse wide data rather than tons of hopeless stuff.

By the way I am Fan of Rafa , so I found one mistake in your
records , Rafa lost 5 G.S. Finals ( 3 to Djokovic , 2 To Federer)
and 4 G.S. Semis ( 2007 Gonzo , 2008 Murray , 2009 Delpo , 2010 Murray at AO , USO , USO , AO resp ).
so Rafa have lost 9 matches at SF and F stages of G.S upto date , so plese correct the stats .

Nice stats. But we can't compare really. Those guys will decline now and their numbers will drop too. If they don't retire first to skew those numbers.

Also, this is a very different situation. Fed was losing matches that go to 5-sets only vs champions. Nadal, Hewitt,Safin, Delpo, Djokovic, Murray.
.

Nadal and Nole mostly don't play that many 5-setters with such top-tier opponents. I mean, yeah they look good playing 5-setters mostly with Wawrinka, Isner, and some unknowns that took RAfa to five twice at W.

Another thing is, Rafa and Nole don't have their own Murray/Rafa/Nole chasing them being 5 years younger. There are not younger champions available.

So, we should look things in perspective here.

Nadal has been straight setted by Tsonga in AO 08 and by Del Potro in USO 09.

Interestingly enough, he went to the win the slam during the next edition.

I wonder what the reason is. Because most greats in any era were showing their potential in late teens.

I mean those guys are entering their primes now and Rafa/Nole are exiting theirs. And they can't even make a dent.

I mean give me at least something. At least someone who is on the level of Fererro would be nice. Who at least makes a final and gets some wins vs top guys at the big stage. I'm not expecting the next Nole here, but please, give me some hope :).

Ferrero was very talented, he made the French Open semi finals in his first attempt.

Yes, this is what I'm saying. Give me younger guys even on the level of Ferrero.
Not Djokovic, but still very decent for a spectator.

But nobody from the youth is even close to even Ferrero's level.

Does that mean he's going to win Wimbledon next year?

LOL if it happens.

Nadal's Wimbledon appearances in the last 2 years have been a mystery to me. I seriously thought he was going to do some damage at Wimbledon this year after getting beaten by Rosol of all people. And then he loses to Darcs in straight sets.

I wonder if Nadal has gone full circle at Wimbledon (early losses until 2005, finals in 2006/2007, wins in 2008/2010, final in 2011 and again early losses since then) or just had incredibly bad luck running into GOATing opponents at Wimbledon in the last 2 editions.

Nadal always had problems at W early rounds when the court is still a lot faster.
I don't remember he had any easy rides in the first week. Nadal generally has problems transitioning to faster courts. Grass/indoor.
