Anybody ever just watch the 2017 AO? That 5th set still gives me chills, nervous wreck, and joy. Greatest match in the 15+ years I have watched tennis.. Or sports in general.
Watching it makes me not give a flip how the numbers play out. Greatest I have ever seen.
Yep did an interview. Also said there’s been no set backs over the past 6 months, but he’s at about 90% and so that’s why isn’t competing now, whereas as he was at 100% in 2017. Main targets are Wimbledon Halle and Olympics, but hopes to play the French too.Apparently confirmed....
Fed to Return to tennis at Doha in March!
CONFIRMED: Switzerland's Roger Federer will return to the ATP in Doda. The Swiss star announced that his intention, after more than a year of inactivity and two surgeries on his right knee, is to return to the circuit in March, in the Qatari capital.
Another article with more details, including Roger will also play in Dubai and left open the possibility of playing clay in 2021!
Federer plans to return to the circuit at the Doha Tournament in March
Roger Federer already has a date to return to the circuit. The Swiss tennis player plans to resume competitions at the Doha Tournament, in Qatar, starting on March 8. It will be the first competition of the current number five in the world in more than a year away, due to physical reasons.
Federer revealed the news in an interview with a Swiss radio on Tuesday. The owner of 20 Grand Slam titles intends to return to the circuit in a smaller tournament, level ATP 250, to reduce his exposure. "I will not be too much in the spotlight and the stress will be less as well," said the 39-year-old.
Even in good physical condition, the Swiss athlete decided to “skip” the Australian Open due to the quarantine conditions in Melbourne, in which he would have to impose total isolation on his wife and four children for 14 days.
The Qatar Tournament is played on a hard court, one of the Swiss specialties. He indicated that he intends to compete in Dubai, too, the following week. In the United Arab Emirates, where Federer resides, the tournament will also be on a hard court, but at a higher level, ATP 500.
Federer also indicated that he could play clay tournaments in the sequence. But he confirmed that his biggest goals of the season are Wimbledon, the Tokyo Olympics and the US Open, when he will have turned 40.

never gonna forget the sound of that crowdYes I do and I was there that night! Most nervous I have ever been at a sporting event.
20 years ago today on February 4, 2001, Federer won his first-ever ATP tournament in Milan. Here’s a look back:
Swiss newspapers:
It wasn't televised in the US, I had to watch extended highlights after the match was over. I remember thinking, "I think Roger can win 8 slams if he gets it all together."I remember this win! 20 years...wow, time really goes by quickly.
He'll be ready for sure but the amount of rust will be hugeFed yesterday in Switzerland. He’s playing on indoor HC’s to prepare for Doha and is “hitting 3 hours a day each afternoon.”
Nothing is a gimme for him anymore unfortunately. Not even Halle or Basel. I just hope he can have one last healthy run.The preliminary lineup of players for Doha is quite impressive. Is not going to be a gimmie for Fed if all them decide to play. Here is the entry list-

That's true...I for one am happy that he's back to playing competitive tennis. Jeez, it's been more than a year since we saw him play. He's probably going to be a tad slower than usual to get himself off the blocks. But I am truly hoping for one more good run...Nothing is a gimme for him anymore unfortunately. If he can play about 5 tourneys on his way to the olympics, I would be happy with that. While Laver believes Federer has very little chance of picking up another Roland Garros trophy, he claimed that the Swiss is a strong candidate for the last two Slams of the year.
"I wouldn’t think too much about him winning the French, but I think Wimbledon is certainly going to be there and the US Open," the Aussie legend said. "I think he can win more tournaments."
Fed has an one last legendary USO run in him, Jimmy like at least and I said this before. We'll see if I'm right

Is he returning in Dubai or Miami?Tennis ain't the same without Roger around. Can't wait to see him back in action.
I don't expect him to hit decent form until later in the year, so these smaller HC events should be a good test for how he feels those knees after tournament action.
Definitely hoping he has a slam run or two in him before he hangs it up for good.
Is he returning in Dubai or Miami?
AmazingDoha
Had he converted that IW Championship point against Del Potro his record would at least have been 10 weeks longer and Djokovic wouldn’t have broken it yet. But it could end up as a moot point if the gap ends up bigger anyway

That was 2018. He then loss to Kokk at Miami 1st round.Everything went downhill after those missed IW CP's. The 2017 comeback was definitely cut short. At least the pressure of protecting the records is out of the way. Just want to see some good tennis before he calls it a day.

Federer will always be the most revered player ever. As a Nadal fan i accept that. Great player but also an ambassador.Yes. Fed's 2017 comeback fell off right there while Nadal was chipping it away one by one every year. Just one too many lost years for Fed. Its all part of the game at the end of the day.

He already looked out of sorts in the Coric match, maybe earlier even.If you look at the timing of events as was revealed only later, a lot had to do with the Nike-Team 8 negotiations falling through.
Looking back, one can piece together the puzzle - Roger was in Calif for IW, the Nike negotiations for a lifetime deal including the RF logo were later revealed to have happened around March.
Roger looked really out of sorts in that in that final, almost peeved. At the time I put it down to just Delpo, but I think Roger was sorely disappointed in the business side of things especially considering his achievements going into March - the AO victory, getting to 100 titles in Rotterdam and oldest No.1
The Uniqlo deal happened later and it wasn't until this year that his RF logo came back to him. It really seems to have kicked him off the confidence high he was riding.
That's my theory.
Old man was cranky because he had to get out of bed early. First time he played a morning match in like 15 years. He already looked out of sorts in the Coric match, maybe earlier even.

It also wasn't just a Masters final he should have won. It was a final he fought incredibly hard to come back in, only to blow 3 match points when trying to serve it out. Any normal man would let that linger and I'm not surprised at all that he went down in his very next match before dipping out for a vacation.Well again, just trying to place his entire IW performance in context of the Nike negotiation timeline.
I'm sure when he was in town, that's the time he got to have face-to-face discussions with Nike reps.
Of course, I can't be sure that was what conclusively made him lose, but the fact that the loss lingered and was the turning point tells me there was something more than merely losing a Master's final he should have won.

You could also see the cracks during Australia, but that was an unbelievably weak tournament he was still able to win. Fortunate to get a guy like Cilic in the final instead of a del Potro who wouldn't let him off the hook so easily. You could be right and perhaps it was all just about the tennis.
Just curious coincidence to me that IW was the turning point where his 'neo' avatar which started at AO17, came off.
