I said long before that he won't be playing with those strict set of rules which include 14 day quarantine , only 1 partner and no family allowed etc etc. . Its more of a mental decision rather than a physical one .

Anybody ever just watch the 2017 AO? That 5th set still gives me chills, nervous wreck, and joy. Greatest match in the 15+ years I have watched tennis.. Or sports in general.

Watching it makes me not give a flip how the numbers play out. Greatest I have ever seen.

Yes I do and I was there that night! Most nervous I have ever been at a sporting event.

Update on Fed's training in Dubai, he's been hitting with a Swiss player who won the French Open juniors, Dominic Stricker:

"In full preparation, Roger Federer has Doha in his sights!

Dominic Stricker posted on his Instagram account four days ago a photo where he poses alongside Roger Federer. Stricker is the winner of the Roland-Garros juniors event, and has spent time on a training block in Dubai with Federer. “What struck me most during this stay and the training sessions is that Roger has a real ability to immediately put maximum effort in training whereas a few minutes earlier, he was very relaxed, he could even joke. I admit it surprised me, but I have to learn some lessons too."

Apparently confirmed....

Fed to Return to tennis at Doha in March!

CONFIRMED: Switzerland's Roger Federer will return to the ATP in Doda. The Swiss star announced that his intention, after more than a year of inactivity and two surgeries on his right knee, is to return to the circuit in March, in the Qatari capital.

Yep did an interview. Also said there’s been no set backs over the past 6 months, but he’s at about 90% and so that’s why isn’t competing now, whereas as he was at 100% in 2017. Main targets are Wimbledon Halle and Olympics, but hopes to play the French too.

Another article with more details, including Roger will also play in Dubai and left open the possibility of playing clay in 2021!

Federer plans to return to the circuit at the Doha Tournament in March

Roger Federer already has a date to return to the circuit. The Swiss tennis player plans to resume competitions at the Doha Tournament, in Qatar, starting on March 8. It will be the first competition of the current number five in the world in more than a year away, due to physical reasons.

Federer revealed the news in an interview with a Swiss radio on Tuesday. The owner of 20 Grand Slam titles intends to return to the circuit in a smaller tournament, level ATP 250, to reduce his exposure. "I will not be too much in the spotlight and the stress will be less as well," said the 39-year-old.

Even in good physical condition, the Swiss athlete decided to “skip” the Australian Open due to the quarantine conditions in Melbourne, in which he would have to impose total isolation on his wife and four children for 14 days.

The Qatar Tournament is played on a hard court, one of the Swiss specialties. He indicated that he intends to compete in Dubai, too, the following week. In the United Arab Emirates, where Federer resides, the tournament will also be on a hard court, but at a higher level, ATP 500.

Federer also indicated that he could play clay tournaments in the sequence. But he confirmed that his biggest goals of the season are Wimbledon, the Tokyo Olympics and the US Open, when he will have turned 40.

Federer Returns to the Tour- Interviw

Federer's return to the tour: as number 5 in the world and after a 13-month break.

The signs had intensified in the past few weeks and the rumour mill was seething. Now Roger Federer has let the cat out of the bag. After having not played a competitive tennis game for over a year since the semifinals at the Australian Open 2020, he wants to return to the ATP tour in the second week of March in Doha.

"I am satisfied that I can say that I will try again in Doha," Federer told SRF sports reporter Bernhard Schär on Monday in a training hall on Lake Zurich. «I've been injured for a long time, but Australia came a little early for me. I also wanted to come back to a smaller tournament, not the Australian Open. In Doha the stands will probably be empty. "

Federer also outlined the rest of the season quite clearly. “Depending on how things go in Doha, I'll play another tournament. Otherwise I'll go back to an additional training block with tennis and fitness. " It is also clear to him that he will compete on clay again this year, but all in preparation for his most important phase of the season, which begins with the grass season. “Everything happens with a view to Halle, Wimbledon, Olympia and the US Open. That is actually the right starting signal. "

The main reason that he is doing so much for a comeback at an advanced age - he will be 40 on August 8 - and after two knee operations, he explained. “I like to play tennis for life, I gave a lot in rehab, had an operation, and walked on crutches. Then I invested a lot in fitness and tennis training. " Now he wants to play tournaments again, leave the training grounds behind participate in the action and see how the body reacts, "This is special for me after such a long year."

The thirst for victory and the motivation are unbroken with the 20-time Grand Slam winner. «I had to go through the bottom in the last few months, but I always enjoyed it and had a great team around me. Now is the time to try again. I would like to be able to celebrate great victories again, and for that I am ready to go a long, hard road. "

The year without tennis also had nice sides. He was, so to speak, the quarterback of his family, and often drove the children around. «It was an interesting and pleasant year for me, totally calm, without traveling. I had to stay at home a lot because of the pandemic. I hope everything turns out better this year. Otherwise we just have to see how things go with traveling. We'd have to take it day by day, just like other people. "

And how does he rate his form? “I'm not at 100 percent yet, but almost. That's why I dare to go back on the tour. I do my sprints, play my training sets. I feel strong, better than in November and December, when there were a lot more insecurities. " It was important that there had been no setbacks in the past six months. «There was always progress, that was positive. I forced the knee, I had to do that too. Now, for the first time, I feel strong enough to take part in a tournament. With the stress and the adrenaline, it's a completely different world. "

The fact that Federer was just revealing his comeback plans to Schär probably also had a sentimental aspect: The radio man, who was 65 in April and a former teacher and tour guide, will retire in May.

The preliminary lineup of players for Doha is quite impressive. Is not going to be a gimmie for Fed if all them decide to play. Here is the entry list-

Nothing is a gimme for him anymore unfortunately. Not even Halle or Basel. I just hope he can have one last healthy run.

That's true...I for one am happy that he's back to playing competitive tennis. Jeez, it's been more than a year since we saw him play. He's probably going to be a tad slower than usual to get himself off the blocks. But I am truly hoping for one more good run...

If he can play about 5 tourneys on his way to the olympics, I would be happy with that. I still think the olympics will be the end.

While Laver believes Federer has very little chance of picking up another Roland Garros trophy, he claimed that the Swiss is a strong candidate for the last two Slams of the year.
"I wouldn’t think too much about him winning the French, but I think Wimbledon is certainly going to be there and the US Open," the Aussie legend said. "I think he can win more tournaments."

Tennis ain't the same without Roger around. Can't wait to see him back in action.

I don't expect him to hit decent form until later in the year, so these smaller HC events should be a good test for how he feels those knees after tournament action.

Definitely hoping he has a slam run or two in him before he hangs it up for good.

Is he returning in Dubai or Miami?

Had he converted that IW Championship point against Del Potro his record would at least have been 10 weeks longer and Djokovic wouldn’t have broken it yet. But it could end up as a moot point if the gap ends up bigger anyway

Everything went downhill after those missed IW CP's. The 2017 comeback was definitely cut short. At least the pressure of protecting the records is out of the way. Just want to see some good tennis before he calls it a day.

Yes. Fed's 2017 comeback fell off right there while Nadal was chipping it away one by one every year. Just one too many lost years for Fed. Its all part of the game at the end of the day.
Federer will always be the most revered player ever. As a Nadal fan i accept that. Great player but also an ambassador.

If you look at the timing of events as was revealed only later, a lot had to do with the Nike-Team 8 negotiations falling through.

Looking back, one can piece together the puzzle - Roger was in Calif for IW, the Nike negotiations for a lifetime deal including the RF logo were later revealed to have happened around March.

Roger looked really out of sorts in that in that final, almost peeved. At the time I put it down to just Delpo, but I think Roger was sorely disappointed in the business side of things especially considering his achievements going into March - the AO victory, getting to 100 titles in Rotterdam and oldest No.1

The Uniqlo deal happened later and it wasn't until this year that his RF logo came back to him. It really seems to have kicked him off the confidence high he was riding.

That's my theory.

He already looked out of sorts in the Coric match, maybe earlier even.

Well again, just trying to place his entire IW performance in context of the Nike negotiation timeline.

I'm sure when he was in town, that's the time he got to have face-to-face discussions with Nike reps.

Of course, I can't be sure that was what conclusively made him lose, but the fact that the loss lingered and was the turning point tells me there was something more than merely losing a Master's final he should have won.

It also wasn't just a Masters final he should have won. It was a final he fought incredibly hard to come back in, only to blow 3 match points when trying to serve it out. Any normal man would let that linger and I'm not surprised at all that he went down in his very next match before dipping out for a vacation.

You could be right and perhaps it was all just about the tennis.

Just curious coincidence to me that IW was the turning point where his 'neo' avatar which started at AO17, came off.

You could also see the cracks during Australia, but that was an unbelievably weak tournament he was still able to win. Fortunate to get a guy like Cilic in the final instead of a del Potro who wouldn't let him off the hook so easily.
