Federer: Playing for Honor and Glory

Roger Federer will be playing for nothing but honor and glory whenever he starts play at the French Open next week. We can be rest assured that a healthy Federer will be playing for respect of past champions such as Laver,Borg, etc. A grand slam is the only one of two things that matters to Roger right now : Capturing the Grand Slam and Beating Sampras' record.

Hes playing for the June Grocery Bill. Though, I dont think the prize money will be substantial enough for the Mirka's monthly grocery bill

And hes playing for grocery money since Mirka racks that up quite a bit. I dont think the prize money will be substantial enough for the months grocery bill

You do know she's pregnant, not overweight. Right? Or are you too busy watching old Sampras matches on DVD in a dark room crying over the past?

Hes too classy to play the game for money. Roger Federer plays for honor and glory first--money 2nd...Remember that.

Are you sure? Because he is a pretty arrogant guy when he's losing. Besides, he has a kid on the way so I think he's putting off trying to be the GOAT for a while and trying to make sure he can support his family for multiple years when he retires in his 30's.

Hes putting off being the GOAT? Why would he put it off? Its not like hes getting any younger and certainly isnt at his peak, and competiton is only getting better compared to what it was these past 4-6 years. And Djoker, Murray, and Nadal are around and will continue to be a fissure in Fed's butt. If anything the LONGER Fed holds off getting the slam record, or getting a french open crown (In which is window has prolly closed already) the more his chances as GOAT continue to diminish

Federer is not arrogant. He is "too good" to lose. Thats why when he does--it is shameful to him. Hes that good

haha with the endorsements he has, and the fact that he already has bucketloads of prize money, i think he can sleep easy without thinking about the economic crisis ;p

Maybe you forgot there was a point in time where Federer was soo unstoppable that it was hard to even get a game off of him.

Yess We remember. When he was abusing clowns like Blake, Roddick, Davydenko, Brokeback 35 year old Agassi etc.. What competition:-|

Its a little better now with Djoker, Murray, and Nadal on top I would say

I'm sure he's not just playing for "honor" and "glory," two completely meaningless intangible rewards.

I'll bet he really wants to win the tournament.

He has to believe, or else he'll have even less of a chance.

Only veterans or soon-to-be-retired players play for honor and glory.

He wants to make sure that when he's 60, Mirka and his kid will have food, shelter, clothing, etc. like any good father would. Endorsements and prize money can last a while but it probably won't last a lifetime.

Maybe you forgot that the Roger Federer who could do that was at the peak of his career with no injury and no Nadal or any other player who could (or tried to be *ahem* Nalbandian *cough* Safin *cough*) be a consistent rival IS GONE. Stop watching Federer DVD's in a dark room and read tennis headlindes from the past year or two.

Tell that to Borg, Connors, or Laver!!!! Money comes and money goes. Glory is forever.

I am a fan of Federer but he has no chance of winning Roland Garros against Nadal. I think Fed may break Pete's record depending on how well he does at Wimbledon. If he plays well at the US Open he should at least tie it and then he can break it next year, assuming he loses Wimbledon.

What about Bill Tilden? One of the greatest players ever, yet he's barely recognized among even the savviest tennis aficionados. He was the Roger Federer of his era, held the world #1 for 7 YEARS and now he's in a small, eroded grave somewhere.
