"Federer should retire" and "Federer can't play tennis any more"

So it's Federer's fault big sponsors want to sign him up?
Nope, did not say that, did not imply that.

Every sport has it's legends and Federer, Nadal, Djokovic are all there because of their hard work...Not a freaking "marketing scheme"
You seem to mistake the players and their work with tennis marketing. Two entirely different things. For tennis marketing the players are basically tools for generating sales.

"Mercedes and Rolexes" for middle aged balding men...Huh...You have a problem with this yet you're a full blown Nadturd?
It is really not my problem, but it is a fact that this segment is very important for tennis marketing. And I find that a shame, it would be better for tennis to market a younger group.

I understand why they do it, because middle class middle aged men have the money. :)

It's not Federer's fault Mercedes and Rolex came to him while Nadal got Kia and PokerStars...Take your rose tinted glasses off.
Who is talking about fault? It seems you are really missing the point in this argument.

It seems you take this way too personal.

^^^ So marketing Nadal isn't the same thing? (Marketing middle aged balding men?)

You're giving way too much power to ATP...Mercedes and Rolex are going to Federer because they think his image fits their brand...ATP doesn't force Mercedes and Rolex to sponsor Federer.

I am giving too much power to the ATP?

Was I anywhere implying that the ATP forces those contracts?

Some of it is the same, however F is clearly the epitome.
Mercedes, Rolex, private jets...

So what's your point? Who exactly is making Federer the face of tennis? I haven't seen any marketing material that would indicate ATP is trying to sell Federer and making tennis a sport for middle aged men... :-?

Has nothing to do with the ATP, I don't know why you bring in the ATP in this discussion.

So, let me ask you this you do not think that F is the 'face' of tennis from a marketing perspective?

Why he is the face of tennis is pretty darn obvious, it's because of his legacy.

My point is that it is not good for tennis that this face is used to market primarily middle class middle aged men, it would be better for tennis to attract the younger generations. And whether F is the right person to attract the younger generation, even with his legacy, is an another topic.

I still don't get what you're complaining about. These companies aren't biased towards Federer. If there's anything these companies are biased towards, it's money-making. Federer still makes them lots of money.

I don't think the fact Federer is still marketed by all these companies bothers you. I think what really bothers you is the fact that Federer is still good enough that all these companies still want him to be one of the faces of their product. If he's still got all these endorsements it means he's still very much in the game. That is what is eating away at you. :)

Indeed, so are you concerned about tennis or money making for large corporations?

Tennis popularity is not really good right now, marketing for private jets may make a lot of money for those companies but it does not do much for the popularity of tennis.

You're not really progressing in this argument, are you? Just stalling...

It's not my job, nor that of the corporations, to grow the sport of tennis. That's the job of the ITF and the ATP/WTA and I definitely see the ATP making a concerted effort to market a guy like Grigor Dimitrov. Hell, the guys on the margins of the ATP website have been Isner and Ferrer for a few days now. Isner and Ferrer!

I would also say it's also the job of the different national associations to grow the sport in their own countries. Canada is doing that with Raonic/Bouchard. Japan is doing that with Nishikori. China has been doing that with Li for years now on the women's side.

Face it, you're complaining about the marketing strategies of different corporations, not the authorities in tennis, who are solely responsible for growing the sport.

Exactly! I still don't understand his point. If Mercedes and Rolex go to Federer, it's based on their internal marketing research...Corporations don't care about how tennis is perceived...They just care about money...and in tennis Federer still gives them the best return on investment.

Mercedes and Rolex endorsing someone isn't going to change the "face" of tennis...It's up to the governing bodies to do that...and they did by making it difficult for Federer after he was dominating everything for four years.

Oh btw middle aged man my arse! Federer has been with Rolex since 2006...You are right...It's just eating him that Federer at age 32 makes more money, gets Mercedes and Rolex while Nadal gets Kia and PokerStars...What he doesn't realize is that Federer has earned this by not only working his arse off throughout his career but also conducting himself in a very professional manner both on and off the court.

He's his own worst enemy for having won so many slams and made so many finals. If Marin Cilic, a very good player, made the final of Wimbledon, he'd be celebrated throughout the land for a breakthrough. But you expect such excellent from Fed, so when he fails to win a tournament, it still somehow stings.

EagleBro, '13 stung us all but '14 is all icing on the cake. Yeah, we wanted #18 last Sunday but I'm oh so proud he fought to the end and showed all the magic is not used up. I'm looking forward to some more great tennis this summer and beyond!
